ahh I had no idea what the touching of blonde hair meant. I get my hair touched everytime I go to Mexico. When I was a young teen in Ixtapa Mexico, I had around 6 or 7 women come and touch my hair. I had no idea what they were saying, but they were very sweet. Some told me in passing they liked blonde hair and did not see it very often. I had no idea about the superstition behind it. That was interesting.
Colorado Girl, my inlaws are down in Donna at a retirement village. My inlaws an most retirees have a named penned to them, Q-Tips. Why? They have white hair and white tennis shoes. LOL I thought that was so funny when I heard it.
Have you been down to take a look? Maybe before you consider, you should go down and take a look to see if that is where you want to raise your children. Good luck!

Ahhh TEBergh - I am so glad you brought up the blonde thing. I had heard it was good luck to touch blonde hair per the mexicans I use to work with in college. I hadn't heard it since so I wasn't sure it was true. But I do know the guys I knew always wanted to touch my hair. Now I know I'm not crazy in my thinking. Thank you. I know there are negatives everywhere but I'm going to focus on the positives. I'm actually getting really excited and have bought some "Learn to speak Spanish" videos for my little boys. I know a little Spanish so hopefully I can improve. Off to my new adventure.

Stargazer - The Qtip thing is funny - thanks for making me smile. My husband and I will be taking a trip down to McAllen soon to find a house. I already know it's not where I WANT to raise my precious boys but 2-4 years until the next promotion is tolerable. My husband has one of those offers you can't refuse, so we need to make the most of it until we get where we really want to be. Being a stay at home mom, it's hard to argue the move when the pay & promotion guarantees me I will be able to stay a "stay at home" mom. Life is what you make it.

I am a white guy living in the Valley. I'm not in McAllen but a small city close to it, Donna. I am definately a minority, but have never had any troubles.
As for golf, if your husband can handle the heat, the golf courses are almost bear during the summer months!! It gets tougher to get on with the arrival of the "winter Texans" but I learned alot from playing with those old farts!!
And as for the crime, you need to know the violent crime isn't high. A majority of all crime here is theft and burglary, so lock your doors and get an alarm system!!

Mcallen Texas and surrounding areas
I am a Blonde hair, green eyed girl born and raised here in the RGV.. I live in one of the small town outside mcallen.. It has its UPs and its DOWNs like any other city of 100.000 +++ its a little difficult espcially with 85% of the popluation is Hispanic. In Mcallen its not that bad and not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. IF you Love to Shop this is the PLace. New Outlet Mall and the Main La plaza mall with all your name brand stores and don't forget Shoping In Mexico. It is very Rich in culture and hertiage. I will admitt there are a few small places i wouldn't go but for the most part it is safe and quiet. North Mcallen is a really good area and Sharyland is like a suburb off of McAllen, known for terific Schools and extremely high property Values. Try House hunting in these areas and edinburg is also good more of a college town but still very good place to live... if you like more info about the area let me know... or email me.

Colorado girl, I forgot to ask, does your husband golf or fish? There are several nice courses around here. As far as the fishing I am still hunting catfish spots!!
