Dogs are regulated at the city or county level, not statewide. There is a border checkpoint on I 10 around Van Horn,if memory serves me correctly, but it is a federal Border Patrol checkpoint looking for illegal immigrants and drugs.

...and are you stopped when crossing. I heard my pets have to have health certificates when I go into another state.

I took two of my dogs in my SUV from TX to Phoenix for hearing testing in 1998. There was a US Border Patrol checkpoint somewhere around Deming/Las Cruces. I was waved on through, with no checks.

If you are shipping by air, health certificates are required regardless of what state it is, even within the same state.

Here in the Valley, we have Nuevo Progreso across from Weslaco, it is a small town and with very low crime and it is safe place to visit.

We are driving all that way but I sure would like to pass on all those certificates till I get to Texas. I will have to make them legal when I get there.

Thanks again for the info. Bound for Texas, You may want to get those rabie shots. Texas does have a lot of bats. I know they live in caves, but once in a while they could leave out of their environment. I saw one, once, on the dock of Lake Michigan...and it was sick. It was lying on its back with its mouth opening and closing. I got away from it fast.

Oh I would never go without their shots. I just thought I could get away with not getting the health certs at 40.00 a piece. They are up to date on their shots now.

Thanks for telling me anyway.

Default Limits on Number of Dogs

Bound for Texas,

Eight dogs? Is yours a canine version of Eight is Enough? LOL

Seriously though, I don't remember which Texas city you are going to, but I know the City of San Antonio has a limit of 5 pets. I think they might allow more if you're a licensed breeder. License tags are yearly ($5 if spayed or neutered, $20 if not).

If you are near McAllen/Harlingen.....there are two popular ports of entry: Reynosa or Progresso. I strongly suggest Progresso. MUCH cleaner, and MUCH easier to get back across. And if you insist on Reynose, I suggest you park on the States side and walk across the bridge.

I wouldn't be near those areas...will be living in Hill Country. I always park stateside and walk over. Not taking any chance of getting into any problems with my car. Thanks for the info, though.

Default Crossing Border in a Car

Just a note. Some US car insurance companies do not extend their coverage into Mexico. If you must drive across, purchase Mexican insurance that provides coverage.
