>> Some US car insurance companies do not extend their coverage into Mexico<<

It would be wise to check .. it use to be you were covered up to x number of miles into Mexico, that might have changed. Also, you probably won't get cell phone coverage.

We crossed at Progesso...

Be aware that they like to steal cars and often if your SUV is stolen the police in Mexico will be driving it days afterward...

There is also a law saying that Americans can't take cars to Mexico to sell...therefore if the Mexicans suspect thats why your driving across the boarder they can impound your car...I had it happen to a friend. BECAUSE their American car insurance was not valid in Mexico, the car was a complete loss.

If I were you, I would take a taxi across and be done with it.

It is easy to park and walk across - the walk is not far to get to the shopping. I would stay away from Nuevo Laredo and Reynosa - I hear it's gotten bad there. Matamoros is okay if you don't venture to far. There's a store, restaurant and secured parking garage named Garcia's that is just across the border. There's another restaurant/bar across the street called Blanca Whites that's a lot of fun and oh my gosh the memories I have at that place. The walk across to Matamoros is a little more lengthy.

A tried and true restaurant is Arturo's - there's a parking lot and a nice little piano bar. The service is great. You won't sit waiting for drink refills! Jalisco and Angels are also good. There's a bakery, sort of midway down on the west side of the street. Many of the bigger stores (Canada - El Disco) also have restaurants on the 2nd level as well as many places to stop in and have a cold cerveza and listen to music.

Here's a website, click on restaurants: Nuevo Progreso

Will Colorado DL work to get us into Cuidad Acuna for shopping or do we really need a passport? What about DL & SS Card?

I've heard that those don't work. You will need a U.S passport or some kind of U.S. passport card...You can probably find out for sure using google...
