Sorry but I don't listen to talk radio and I am not confused as to what socialism is.

But this thread is not about Mexico. It is about Texas.

i am glad to have this information. I am planning on moving to Dallas from California. I don't have a job prospect, so i will be looking for work. I am not moving due to the state of the economy, I am leaving for a life change. I know there are other places that I can go, but i have some distant family in Texas and that was my reason for choosing there. Is this a bad move?, not sure, but i am going to give it a go. I have no reason to stay here in California. No parents, children are grown and i am newly divorced. Any suggestions?

Do you have a job in California? That may be the one good reason to stay.

Otherwise- if you are middle- to senior- manager level and have an extensive network in your industry, it may not be too hard to find a job in Texas.

If you're a teacher, don't have a college degree, or are looking for "living wage" type jobs (customer service, retail, call center)....your job prospects in Texas are pretty bleak.

One really hard fact to mention, as far as reality checks. Parts of Texas are going to run out of adequate supplies of water in the next decades. Of course, some already have. Don't move to an area that is facing this...it's comng, regardless of what we do. Even if the population in those certain areas of Texas do not increase (extremely unlikely to NOT increase), it's coming.

Umm, don't know if you noticed or not, but we are in a recession. Things generally aren't well around the US. If you want to find problem areas or negatives, you can find them anywhere you look. What makes more sense though is to do comparisons with other places; not just single out a particular place and bash it.

OP: Why do you not list where you are from? It gives others the impression you are attacking the state from the outside.

Now this is not for people who had job transfers or stable transitions. I realize that people are moving for other reasons.

This is for people wanting out of their own state because of the economy. This is for people who read those false reports on Yahoo nd MSN, for people who think Texas is booming. Well it actually isn't. Now, yes at the beginning of the recession it wasn't hit as hard as home states, but yes it has been hit, and we are feeling it pretty bad. In fact we are in a budgetary crisis. Home prices are dropping and foreclosures are on the rise. Jobs are scarce. Yes we added jobs, but not in middle class jobs. Middle class jobs are actually being reduced. I am including a few articles that help to better explain the situation. We are being called , "The New Ireland".

I am concerned for people who already have jobs in their home states but might give them up, or single moms with a few grand thinking they can show up and life will be good, or teachers who for some reason actually think their are jobs here.

The rush to Texas reminds me of other movements like the California Gold Rush (where most people never really struck gold and many suffered), or other migration movements where people showed up in the US to realize that they would live in cramped housing situations full of sickness, work 15 hour days, etc.
I keep up with various people around the country and recently two of these people (one in NY and one in CA) have mentioned a very disturbing item. These two are considering relocating to Texas, both without immediate prospects of employment or means of income. Both of these people were asking what the economy in Texas is like because they have been seeing and hearing ads on radio, TV and print that Texas is doing great and encouraging people to move here. These ads are not being placed by any Texas Chamber of Commerce or businesses. These ads are being placed by the State of Texas and feature GOOBERner Perry spouting trash about how Texas is the land of milk and honey. Yes the two did verify they were state run ads.

What a sweet deal out Texas government is handing you people. Texas' economy might not be as bad as others but to many people are taking the "glass half full" attitude when there is a slow leak in the glass! Now Texas is using needed tax dollars in advertisements to lure people here so they can add to the unemployment and welfare system. Seems Texas is targeting these ads in the states that are having really bad problems.

I was wondering why we are seeing so many posts of "I'm moving to Texas with 5 kids and no job because I'm looking for milk and honey!".

It's not just Texas, but across the US. I've monitored the forums for other states, and there are many restless people looking at other locations to live. Kind of the "grass is greener on the other side of the fence" type of thing. I'm sure some are truly moving from horrible locations, and maybe have some smart relocations in mind, but many just seem to want to live somewhere else. They often don't seem to have a very good understanding of the new place they have in mind, but they still are bent on moving in that direction. Others will try to help with reality checks, but those words seem to just go over their heads.

I wasn't aware this was such a problem... well, maybe for Austin because outsiders have been somewhat fooled into thinking the streets there are lined with gold... but I don't know if this is happening in other areas of Texas. I see lots of out-of-staters where I'm at, but they're almost all job transfers or similar.
