If we let the schools go down the drain, we are giving up on the future.

It is interesting how all of the education budget cuts seem to center around staff and what are worthwhile programs such as music and art. Yet I don't hear anything about cutting the sports programs, selling off and/or dismantling the near professional level football stadiums, etc. Maybe Texas needs to rethink its priorities and get back to basics of education?

Football is a semi-god in Texas, and I doubt the sports programs will ever be touched.

One other step in the right direction would be to educate legal citizens only. All others have to pay tuition.....or go home.

But thanks to Plyler vs Doe, we are forced to pay for the education of those who have no right to be here in the first place.

I read a story last year where the DFW school districts had a 20% attendance by illegal aliens and anchor babies of illegals. Now these school districts are looking at a whopping 25% cut in staff!

I most certainly agree that they should either pay full price to have their children educated or bar them from the public schools. I also feel that the school districts should not be creating special programs for those that can not speak English. If you can't speak English then go to a private school until such time as you can.

Too many people are trying to be politically correct and not bring up this major drain on not only the school budgets but every other budget such as social services, police, fire, etc., etc. As soon as America wakes up then possibly these huge deficits in local governments and schools can be significantly reduced?

Yep. It's the 800-pound gorilla in the room.

Bilingual education needs to be scrapped, period, and language instruction confined to ESL only, for a limited amount of time.

Definitely agree with this!

Regarding the earlier posts concerning sports though, as Cathy said, football in particular is VERY big in Texas. But as concerns the main issue, it must be remembered that this is an area that not only pays for itself for the most part, but also brings in revenue.

But illegal immigration doesn't hurt anyone, remember? (end sarcasm)

If you are in Dallas:

Come to State Representative Kenneth Sheets' District Office opening:

Saturday, February 19, 2011
9:30am - 12:00 noon
6301 Gaston Ave, Suite 536 (75214)

Let him know:
• NO CUTS to public school funding
• Use the $9.3 Billion "Rainy Day Fund"
• Demand Governor Perry sign the paperwork for $830 Million in federal aid for classroom teachers

Let him know that public education is a priority in our community, and we expect him to vote acordingly in Austin as our elected representative!

I totally agree with Barbara Bush. Deep cuts in this state's education budget would be a tragedy. There are many, many other things that can be cut besides education. They need to use the "rainy day" fund, take the 830 million in federal money, or do whatever else needs to be done to spare the public schools. The children in this state are truly our future and we can't afford for them to fall even further behind. I'm going to write my congressmen and senators about this matter, it's just too important to ignore.
