Haha, what do you mean your mom is nearly 50? 50 is the new 30 , I've never met a 50 year old who was too old to cut their lawn.. Sorry for being off-topic but this was just too funny!

What a strange law. Just because a lot of people do something illegal that doesn't make it right. A lot of Texans drink and drive, still it's illegal, a lot of Texans smoke marijuana, still it's illegal...

I think the bill itself is stupid, but if it gets passed I think it would be unfair that some people have to follow a law while some don't.

Always look at the source - it's because that legislator has a gardener and maid.

Texas has long been a hotbed of controversy on immigration issues. And a proposed immigration bill in the Texas state House is sure to raise more than a few eyebrows. The bill would make hiring an "unauthorized alien" a crime punishable by up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine, unless that is, they are hired to do household chores.

Yes, under the House Bill 2012 introduced by a tea party favorite state Rep. Debbie Riddle -- who's been saying for some time that she'd like to see Texas institute an Arizona-style immigration law -- hiring an undocumented maid, caretaker, lawnworker or any type of houseworker would be allowed. Why? As Texas state Rep. Aaron Pena, also a Republican, told CNN, without the exemption, "a large segment of the Texas population" would wind up in prison if the bill became law.
Maybe the bill should exempt all illegal hiring except for maids and gardeners. If you hire someone illegal for household chores, go to jail. For business, it is fine.

Make those bringing in the illegal maids and gardeners be required to pay them minimum wage, overtime pay, workmans comp, and social security, and of course their health care. It's only cheap for the lazy to have their servants because they aren't paying the costs of them. Cheap for them, not so cheap for the taxpayers subsidizing all this servant labor.

In El Paso (not sure about other large cities) realtors often tout the "maid's room" feature of homes. This is because so many homeowners hire LIVE-IN maids who reside in the home and rarely leave it during the time of their stay with the employer. They are essentially 24/7 employees in many cases, unless they have someone to stay with on their weekend day(s) off. Many of the maids who come up from the Mexican interior see it as a living style that affords them creature comforts they would not enjoy in Mexico - room and board and in many cases clothing.

While it may not be all that common, some homeowners do pay Soc Security for their maids and often will attempt to help them obtain their visa / residency card, etc.

Well, if the person doesn't live in the US, how is she/he an illegal? Many come over the border for work in El PAso and Brownsville, and go home every night. How it is different than hiring the neighbor kid to do your yard or baby sit your kids?
