How can one compare Amarillo and Augusta. Augusta is so pretty. So which one do I want to retire at. The cold and snow is what bothers me but just go on Google Earth and take a look and I have been to both of them. Do I freeze but live in Gods country or be a little warmer and live in mundane land?

Amarillo gets a lot of cold and snow, too.

I'd pick Maine- I have no idea why Amarillo would be on your retirement list unless you have family there or are lured in by a lower COL. Snooze....

I don't think you can compare the two cities. I'm curious how your criteria led you to arrive with those two as your finalists.

Choose Maine!! I live in Amarillo right now and used Maine as my getaway a couple of years ago. There really is no comparison. Maine is so beautiful and charming and yes, it gets cold, but so does Amarillo. We hit -22 degree weather this year. Plus, it's ugly and boring. I'm waiting for my husband to graduate college and then we're out of here.

No, it did not hit -22 degrees last year. The low for the year was -6 and that was an oddity. It normally doesn't get that cold.

And, there are plenty of things to do in Amarillo. It just takes a little bit of money to do them.

The flatness of the Panhandle is incredibly beautiful. It's just a matter of opinion.
