don't live there now but grew up in Kingsbury in 50s and 60s--went to hs in Seguin and isd then was really pretty good -- at least in English dept -- don't know about now--and college at what used to be Texas Lutheran College now a University--got a top-notch education for such a small liberal arts school--all my professors were at least masters and many had their PhD's--Vern Lundquist the tv sports commentator was one of my speech instructors--my kids certainly did not have that experience but they went to UNT in Denton, UTA in Arlington and some years at Southwest TX--of the university that shall now be nameless...and most of their BA instructors were grad students, some of whom could not speak understandable English...

thought Seguin was kind of a drag then and could not wait to get out and go to "big city" but should have appreciated it for the great small-town living it was--think from what I have seen on coming back for visits some things are kind of the same and some things are worse==many more Hispanics now living in area so it has changed from kind of German farming community to more of the SA flavor--notice that lots of people are working in SA or Austin and driving in because they are trying to be attached to small town life...

went to hs with David Baenzinger whose family owned the old Baenzinger's grocery store that does not exist any more

loved eating at El Apache and Ranchito (I remember when they got sanctioned for serving horsemeat long, long time ago) I worked with son of family that owned Ranchito when I worked at SMI during my college years--wish I had bought stock in that company...

can remember when The Palace movie theater used the upstairs seating for their segregated section...and saw segregated water fountains on the square around the court house...

Saw Willie Nelson perform over 30 years ago at the Guadalupe Co Fair wearing a dark suit and tie and short hair--just him and his guitar--that is a memory I will treasure --

The thing I really liked about that area was that it was close enough to Luling that you could drive to City Market and get bbq whenever you wanted...

thanks--TX Nick--lots of open rolling land--think it is getting lots of people buying an acre or so and putting up a double wide which is really not my idea of quality living but it is affordable...there were some great people living there---I went to the school in Kingsbury before it was closed...used the old high school and had only 6 grades--1-3 (no kindergarten then) in one room and 4-6 in another--we used the basketball gym for inside play room and the stage there for our christmas plays and "graduation"

ate outside in the cook shack--Miss Eva Harbouth was the cook--great food--when we had ice storms and pipes froze we had to go outside to the privys--that was yucky--heated the rooms with great wood stoves that the county provided the wood for--if you sat next to the stove you sweated all winter and if you sat away, you were wearing your coat on some days...

in the spring when the county cut the grass of the land around the school, we would go out and find baby bunnies during recess---I took one home and he actually survived--we fed him with a doll's baby bottle and evaporated milk--put him outside when he was big enough to eat grass and stuff--he lived in our backyard for several years...

some really neat times...and still pretty country...

Yea, sounds like it. I "discovered" Kingsbury while visiting the Kingsbury Aerodrome there a year ago. Great people there and love their Fly Ins.

Sure, once a month people from the area (Austin, Canyone Lake, New Braunfels, etc) get together and work on WW1 planes that are then turned around and sold to the public. If you know aviation, the latest is a German Fokker Tri plane. These are all full-scale and usually made from scratch or real parts. It's one of the last places in the nation that build these kinds of aircraft. They do this on 50 acres of farmland that also contains a grass strip. Free rides are given at their fly ins. It's fun!

Beautiful country. Website is: Vintage Aviation Historical Foundation

Default seguin tx news

from seguin tx-saw your post and wanted to let you know I am a Seguin lifer, grad shs, grad tlu, saw Willie at the Fairgrounds, that was the day he was wearing a black suit and he tripped over a railing when he started out to the area of the pitchers' mound to sing, he didn't perform very long---we all thought he'd been boozing, or he wouldn't have tripped...I have a link to the July 3,4,5 2008, big class reunion that I can send you, if you'd like to see who all showed up. I carpooled to shs with Ruth Baenziger, older sister of David, we were class of 1962. If you'd like the link here's the email to write----sheenashs@gmail.com
what a coincidence I saw your posting....I was sourcing El Campo because our granddaughter is going to be playing in the Jr. Little League All Stars playoffs this weekend and your blog contained the info re: ElCampo and Seguin and thus, I saw your post. Go Mats!
