Aren't crook and conservative synonyms? (Sorry, I just couldn't resist. Don't send me hate mail.)

Why do people bash Waco?
Here's the summary as to why: Christians nowadays do NOT have a true Christian spirit about them. It is more of "spiritual self righteousness" and "spiritual arrogance". Waco is a throw back to the old world ways of thinking.....say for example, Baylor is Baptist and they do NOT permit any dancing on campus (as that is something that the devil would use to lure boys and girls into sexual relations, etc) and the attitude just doesn't give people credit. Instead, it puts them down as being susceptible to falling for the ways of the devil.
Now, you may think I'm being ridiculous, but I'm stating the facts. Waco has a lot of "preserved", old world religious ideology that simply clashes with common sense and today's world. It does not respect other religious points of view, does not tolerate anyone who is "different" and it just ends up turning people away.
Waco is not a positive city. It seeks to find fault in people and, as I stated, is not well tolerated by others who drive through. You drive THROUGH Waco and get to the other side of town as fast as possible. Waco has no one to blame but itself. It's not the Branch Davidian thing.....it's the arrogance of the people who live there, who seem to think everyone who doesn't go to their church then must be of the devil. That attitude and way of seeing the rest of the world turns people off.
If Waco could act somewhat open and practiced what they preached in church to outsiders, people might actually stop for a little bit. But when met with an attitude and feeling like you're being looked down upon by the residents doesn't lend itself to an "inviting atmosphere". It comes across as hostile and distant, like it's stuck in the Medieval Times. Don't stop here if you're gay, even if you're car is running on fumes. They may burn you at the stake.

You think that all Christians are of Pat Robertson/Jerry Fartwell persuasion? That's downright ignorant to think that...Waco to me seems not to have too much to it...if you landed a job at Baylor or were going to school there...then you would really be stuck there...and I think Waco will be what you make of it if you live there...there appears to be above average crime for a city of its size...however...I'm sure you can have fun down there...and DFW is about 2 hours away...and Austin is about an hour and a half away...so if you do get bored in Waco...there is always stuff nearby...you must check out the Czech Bakery in West...which isn't far from Waco...I'm sure one can have fun in Waco...and I am a proud Christian...do I interpret the religion as a fundamentalist...no...but I try to live a good life following Christ's ways...I have never held any feelings of hatred toward homosexuals

LOL that is too funny. they were dancing at Baylor. ok, guys, it was a tongue in cheek posting, but true to a large degree - dancing has been banned for years at Baylor, a lot of my friends graduated from there, so thanks, but I know this for fact.
didn't mean to upset you if you like Waco and Baylor. Baylor's a great school, actually and has a great reputation. I respect the university. but the question of the post was "why do people not like Waco" and I was referring to the overall picture of it's past and what it stands for. come on, it really does embrace the overall "conservative Texas" persona. you have to admit that. if it's changed recently, it's reputation is still in tact.

My wife went to Baylor her first year in college, before we got married. Dancing was banned. They secretly had them off campus and called them "foot functions." I was at Hardin-Simmons in Abilene the same year, where dancing was also banned. We called dancing "creative movement exercise."

Apparently the dance ban ended at Baylor 12 years ago, one year after my daughter received her degree. See the link below.
