Just ask TexReb.
TexReb and I have had to agree to disagree on this one. I'm absolutely certain that I will never change TexReb's mind, and I'm equally certain that Texas is not a "Southern" state in the way he means it.

Yes, I have argued that point with him a number of times.....
As you might already know, I consider myself a West Texan who grew up in the Trans-Pecos region...and NOT a southerner. I might say "ah" for "I" if I'm not paying attention...."fixing to"....and "y'all"......but......LOL!!!
Having said that.....my ancestors DID migrate to frontier Mexican Texas from the true South...MS and VA....but they came with the De Zavala colony in the 1830's.
It is my opinion that anyone who has seen the true, hardcore deep south (starting with LA and going south and east/northeast from there)....they would not consider most of Texas as the south, other than deep East Texas along the Sabine river.

Actually, you said it better. Texas is still considered a southern state but since it's so large, it really is kind of southern and kind of western too. East Texas, it would be safe to say, is the deep south. Then in some parts of Texas, one may as well be in Mexico.

I was born in and grew up in East Texas, almost six decades ago. And I still do not consider Texas to be the South. Nor did my parents or grandparents, from what they said when they were still around. That despite my aunts being Daughters of the Confederacy; they were also Daughters of the Republic of Texas and members of the DAR (which didn't make them northerners any more than being Daughters of the Confederacy made them Southerners or Texas a Southern state).

I consider the Spanish/Mexican influence far stronger in most of Texas than the deep south...

Okay, I looked it up on Wikipedia and to me, Texas is what it is and I trust this much more than anyone's opinion, including my own, of course. If it isn't southern, what in the world is it besides "It's Texas." That just doesn't cut it.

Texas is SOUTHERN in the GEOGRAPHICAL sense.......it is south central USA.
Then you get to the question of whether Texas is SOUTHERN in the cultural sense.
Texas was part of the Confederacy, yes, so it was part of the south during the War Between The States/Civil (nothing Civil about it...) War.
But...having said that, it was nothing like the rest of the Confederacy. It was especially valuable as a seaport during the war.

I give up. I guess it's all how one looks at it, but I will always consider it a southern state. I just can't help it.

Ah, yes, Wikipedia. TexReb has acknowledged being a contributor to the Wikipedia article on this topic and thus, of course, it does reflect his bias.
