Everytime I think of Waco I think of the Branch Davidians. Also my friend lives there, he is African American, and tells me how ghetto it is.

You betcha'. It's ghetto in many areas, but there are very nice areas as well just like what you'll find in any small, medium, or large town.

Maybe because he live in the ghetto. The city as a whole is not considered ghetto.

Just because he is black you assume he lives in a ghetto? Anyway, he doesn't live in a ghetto. This fact probably blows your mind.

Waco has good and bad just like any city, but overall I really love it here. People are friendly, we have little traffic, plenty of places to shop and eat, and more things to do than most people realize. And if you want more of the big City life, we are a short drive away in either direction from DFW or Austin. You wouldn't believe some of the beautiful sites in and around our area. One of my favorite drives is down Lakeshore drive as you overlook the lake. Waco and the greater Waco area has a lot to offer and is growing. If you haven't lived here, it's hard to really know how nice it is. But to each his/her own. Not every place is right for everyone.

If you hate it you probably have only driven by
I moved here in 2004 and I LOVE it. I lived in LA and Phoenix for the previous 25 years, so I have experienced fabulous restaurants, museums, festivals and cultural activities. Waco has all of that only on a much smaller scale. There is virtually no traffic, shopping is sufficient (although we don't have every chain you can think of, what we have is adequate.) There are plenty of restaurants now - from fine dining to great hamburgers. Baylor has tons of events every week, from chamber ensembles to full symphony - not to mention Broadway caliber shows at the Hippodrome. Downtown is on an upward curve of revitalization with a walk to loft housing, shopping, events and dining.
There are high crime areas, blight and poverty. Name me a place that doesn't have those problems. Yes, it is politically and religiously conservative, but that doesn't mean you can't live your life as you see fit. I do.
But before you condemn this area you need to get off the interstate and actually experience it!

Why some people worry about Christians and conservatives, that is beyond me. I'm pleased to be both.

LOL I was thinking the same thing. I think in this time there are far more pressing things to be worrying about.
Illegals are crossing over the border in droves and yet people are worried about who goes to church on a regular basis? maybe the real problem is there is a LACK of morality.

I like Waco well enough because it reminds me of Fort Worth in the 1950s before it got so big. Waco still has more of an old timey 'town' feel to it. As for the Branch Davidians, unfortunately, Waco will be saddled with the stigma of that for a long time, just as Dallas is with the JFK assasination.
