My mother spent about half her childhood in Paris; she says it was OK when she was growing up in the 1950s-1960s but she wouldn't go back there now.

In the late 60s it was very idyllic to me as a young kid. I can even remember seeing some horse-drawn wagons around town (yes, really) and we used to go to the Saturday night rodeo.

My Daddy bought a sort of mini-ranch up there before he died so we used to try to go in the mid to late 1990s and enjoy things. But there's really not that much to do and most of my relatives are at the cemetery. The town square is still pretty quaint but the Wal-Mart magnet has pulled a lot of things outside 'the loop'. And you can only go to TaMolly's (yes really) so many times.

We kept it for about three years after and then decided to sell - but it was a pretty good investment. Not spectacular, but good. Many people are buying such property now especially around Bonham and Honey Grove (nearby) as they are somewhat more convenient to Dallas and I hear the prices for land have gone up even more.

Black and White relations have not been good in Paris in the last year. There was a big controversy with a Black girl at Paris High feeling she was unjustly punished. There was a lot of publicity about it, I am sure you can google it. I don't have an opinion on it but many of the Whites said she had been in trouble before. Luckily, they avoided a Jena situation.

Of course most of my relatives up there are dead and gone and I knew them well many years ago -- but one side of the family NEVER used the "N" word (and we would have been whipped if they heard it) and the other side used it constantly. The side that used it constantly, however, ironically was the friendliest and considered some blacks as 'almost' family. Another irony (maybe to some) is that the side which never used the word had the Confederate War veteran history.

Well I think people who can talk about such things frankly and acknowledge the past can build upon the future.

I've been around Paris to work and visit a lot for the past 25 years but have never lived there. If it's relaxed and slow-paced your wanting, you've found it. Shopping and dining are limited. There's a nice little community college right in town that is an important element in the community. There is a strong agriculture influence there - most of the people have some connection to the land.....they don't have the rich man/poor man attitude like you probably saw in Tyler (Tyler is oil country, Paris has never had that kind of money so most people there are middle income). They seem to respect people who work and play by the rules.

There are nice large trees, rolling hills, and most of the new homes are being built in the rural areas.....very nice 5-10 acre homesites....and there are good paved roads all over the rural areas (that's important in an area with black sticky soil and lots of rain!). There's a nice lake about 10 miles north of town.....some nice homes there on small acreages, peaceful fishing (not a resort type area). There is a pretty good medical community...most specialties represented....two hospitals. There are two school districts...Paris itself and then North Lamar (behind Campbell Soup) - North Lamar is a progressive, well-managed district.

Best wishes in your move.........

i was reading over this post and thought i'd send you a message. me and my husband are planning on moving to texas and i came across paris, tx. It seems exactly what we are looking for...the only thing i can't seem to find out is if there are any factories around there. My husband has experience in factories. He's done assembly work many times. Are there any factories around there. If not in town maybe out side but not too far of a drive?? Any help I would much appriciate. Thanks Heather S
