there are more positive impacts than negative ones. if the crowd and possible danger bothers you, you can always opt to not visit downtown during this time.

Looks like Austin needs more hotels.

Do you think this is enough to move SXSW in San Antonio for good? But yeah Austin does need hotels.

I don't. Too much history, money, and exposure for Austin to let go of. Austin just simply needs to improve it's infrastructure for the event. It's getting more and more popular now worldwide. If Austin just simply gives this up so easily, it becomes evident that they are not ready to become a big city.

Austin seems like a big city to me if I get stuck in its rush hour.

I don't care where SXSW is located as long as Fitz and the Tantrums show up.

I whole heartedly agree. This I think will be a big challenge for Austin, they'll either make it or break it. If they do let this go, Austin's chances of getting a urban rail and developers interests decreases dramatically. All the while, San Antonio is taking the big cake, which is completely unfair for Austin.

Austin is almost completely reliant on the state funding needed to improve its major roadway infrastructure, and the state is broke. Austin can't afford to improve its infrastructure to accommodate one humungous event each year, its just not cost effective. San Antonio can have the event as far as I'm concerned. It is just one of the times each year when I have to avoid going anywhere near downtown or even across town because of the crowds and related problems it brings in.

I mean, how ignorant is it for the sponsors of this event to sell numbers of tickets far beyond the finite capacity of the place hosting it?

I'm not sure San Antonio would support the type of bands that play at SXWS.
