You're exactly right, and I guess my wording was poor.
It isn't that there is nothing else, but the negatives of all the tourism (and the specific types of tourism) outweighed the positives of the little beach there. Corpus does have significantly more wildlife opportunities. Neither are big cities.

Agreed... normally the armpit of Texas is noted to be Port Arthur, with little contest.

I think Galveston is a gem... even though it could use some TLC in some areas it has some great historic architecture, and a good number of things to do for a visit. But I don't think I'd want to live there.

Galveston is a gem. A gem covered in the gulf's seaweed and filthy water. To say there's a huge metro to the north, Galveston is more than sad and unsatisfying. I love the island, but man is it underutilized. Why haven't any artificial beaches and entertainment districts been developed on the south end of the island?

I've enjoyed my trips to Galveston Island.

The Strand historic district is really neat.

There was a lot of new development going on right on the beach the last few years, one was a "new urbanism" development (I think Coastal Living Magazine had their Dream Home or whatever it is done there a few years back), a highrise place, and a condo development on the other end of the island I've heard good things about.

It's not an economically vibrant place though, a lot of the nicer homes are just second homes for the rich (they don't live there full time) and the industries are tourism like cruise ships. Saw a recent list that a little island off Galveston (is it called Tiki Island?) was one of the wealthiest areas of the state or something. Driving in from the mainland, Texas City is a big eyesore of refineries.

Lived there for years. We even have a BOI. Yes, I'd move back. We tried too a couple of years ago, but Timan is ruining the place.
Those second homes for the rich would not be there were it not for federal flood insurance and state of Texas wind insurance. Now we have to rebuild the beach for them, too.
When my family had a beach house there was no such thing as flood insurance. If the tide took the house, if was your hard luck. No insurance company would insure a beach house. And, they shouldn't. When the lot went out with the tide, all you could do was cry and say so long.
Everybody is holding back to see if Tillman gets gambling at the Flagship pier. It will take more than a merry go round and a ferris wheel to bring Galveston back. People have lakes for boats and fishing that were not there in the old Galveston hey day. When Texas passes casino gambling, Galveston will be a different place.

NO way! Went for the first time this weekend. it is awful. I know they are cleaning up from the hurricane still, but I just cant get past a walmart and golden corral on the beach. That has to be the ugliest beach town ive been too. The historic architecture downtown is nice but thats it.
