Pelican Bay is well not one of the best places on earth to live. I dont live there personally but live close enough to know I would never want to live there.

We currently live in Pelican Bay. I have found that if ask people that have lived around here for several years, will tell you Pelican Bay is an awful place to live. We moved here about 3 months ago, for the exact same reason you are looking to...for affordable rent. We like it here. From what we've learned from neighbors, this area has been cleaned up a lot and is now a nice place to live. The schools are great.
Hope my info has helped you.

Its difficult to live near water cheaply. Rockport and Aransas Pass were about the cheapest at one time but they have gone up recently. You could always look in the classifieds of different papers- Rockportpilot aransaspassprogress etc. Rockport is a nice friendly place. AP isnt too bad but much poorer.

Pelican Bay
Pelican is not so bad a place to live. The City Hall is improving and the city in general. The people are as good as anywhere else and the police are diligent in patroling the town.
Recently DSL and other High Speed Internet have become available in Pelican Bay from www.prairienet.us , so high tech folks have a reliable way to communicate and grow their family & businesses.
I've been located adjacent to Pelican Bay for more than 20 years now and I'd reccommend it to anyone. Property values have done nothing but go up.

Pelican Bay City Is Not That Bad.
I moved to Pelican Bay about three years ago and really like it. I have had no problems with crime, city services or my neighbors. Coming from Arlington, it was quite a change. I purchased a unimproved lot lot with lots of oak trees and had the city tap into the water & sewer. I put in a asphalt pad for a mobile home and moved a trailer in. It's makes for inexpensive living. Having Eagle Mountain lake within walking distance is also nice.

I started a little website to share information about the city. No, I do not work for the city.

The people in Pelican Bay aren't bad BUT... they have really had some problems with police. The city has the 2nd lowest per captia income in Tarrant County and is a tiny city but has been trying to maintain it's own police department for years. They tend to get the bottom of the barrell in police. I would recommend googling the city. The most recent incident involves a police chief by the name of Frankum who has a penchant for kicking doors in on trailers and reportedly shot a mans dog to get his attention. He has opened an impound lot and they tow anyones car who has forgotten their insurance card or any other minor reason they can come up with. He is upfront about the fact that this impound lot is a scheme to raise money for the police department. His salary was recently doubled and this tiny city has plans to expand their police force. He has had several run ins with a specific city council member who he recently summoned to his office and read her her Miranda Rights. The problem was that she had been given some badges belonging to the city to frame and he suspected her of theft after another public run in with her at a council meeting. Most of their chiefs don't last long and this one won't but the next one won't be any better.
Good luck.

when i lived in Parker and Wise Counties and went to Eagle Mountain Lake alot (to wakeboard), i remember Pelican Bay being kinda trashy but hey, i would rather live there than any other town in another state other than Texas! i remember looking at rentals there and they were so rundown..i ended up buying a double wide on 3 acres with a huge barn and tack room in Paradise (Wise County) for $55K instead...this was in the late 90s

Pelican Bay Police
I live in Pelican Bay and i have to say ... Hats off to Chief Frankum and the Pelican bay Police Department. When Frankum took over, he immediately made a new policy and has made it impossible for crappy cops with lots of baggage to be hired by the PBPD. As far as the towed vehicles, GET INSURANCE, STOP HAULING DOPE IN AND OUT OF TOWN AND DONT COMMIT FELONIES and the cops wont tow your car! Keep kicking butt boys! We now feel safe and we support you!
