I worked for the same company for a long time before we relocated and this wasn't an issue. The place I work for part time does not allow employees to smoke on breaks and we are told we cannot smoke on the property even when off the clock even though regular customers of course can. Is this normal?

The customer gives your company money. Your company gives you money.

Follow the money.

Yes, I think it is becoming increasingly normal to disallow smoking in all work and public places. Non-smokers are the vast majority and do not appreciate being exposed to smoke.

Employers are especially vulnerable to liability claims for health damages when employees and customers are exposed to those hazards.

Sorry guess I should have been more clear. I was meaning like out in the parking lot or on the curb. I know almost nowhere allows workers to smoke inside.

If it's public property where the smoking is occurring I think the company is overstepping bounds.

If it's company property, well, it IS their property.....

Just walk off their property and light up.... If they raise any objections contact the ACLU: http://www.aclu.org/affiliates

What's next? The company telling it's employee's they can't go to fast food places for lunch because it's unhealthy?

Y'all stink when you come back in from smoke breaks! Customers and co-workers can smell it. Yuk. But as far as your health goes, if you have health problems due to smoking and you have group health insurance, your co-workers will pay for it! Some health plans even offer a discount for non-smokers. You could also look at that as a premium for smokers.

They lease the property. I just had never heard of anywhere refusing to let someone go outside and off the property for a quick smoke break at a set break time before.

Nope, don't smoke but I do find the smell offensive when people come back from lunch smelling like food or booze....

I guess one other thing I find odd is I was also told I was not allowed to use snus(spit less tobacco) as well on break.
