Default Lamesa-anyone know ANYTHING about this town?

Ok, I finally got all my choices lined up-with Panhandle and Hill Country jobs all narrowed down, and going to be making my trips end of this month and beginning of Sept and decide...................however.................. .
there IS a very good job that opened up in Lamesa that would be perfect for me. but i am not going to choose to live somewhere JUST based on a job, because i can work anywhere (RN)....
so, before i add this THIRD option for serious consideration, can anyone tell me the insider scoop on Lamesa? yes i have read and googled everything about the town and county already, but that never gives you a REAL good insider view on a place.......(if it did, i would have never moved to South Texas!!!)
thanks yall!

Never heard of it, but I'd recommend that you take your own very good advice that you've offered to folks considering the RGV: google the local newspaper's website, and start reading the articles. You could probably even contact the place that's offering you a job to find out the newspaper's URL.

Good luck - hope you wind up some place you like more than you do the Valley.

yeah. well i talked to my friend who tells me Lamesa aint much but rock country and lots of goats...very few cattle........doesnt sound too appealing.
they dont have an online newspaper unfortunately, and i, the google expert, find very little info on the town..........
so it looks like Amarillo or Ft Hood (Lampasas/Gatesville/Belton) area are in the running and have 2 months left to make a firm decision! i will definitely post after my road trips with my impressions!

Halfway between Midland and Lubbock (1 hour to either). About 40 minutes to Andrews and Big Spring. Small community college. Close-knit community. Does have a Wal-Mart. It is the seat of Dawson County (which is a dry county). I think there is a prison in Lamesa. 2 elementary, 1 middle, and 1 high school. Small hospital. About 9,500 people... not really growing.

yes, there is a large TDCJ-ID unit there, housing almost 2000 offenders.

Hi,
Someone told me that the hospital in Lamesa has 25 beds. What size hospital are you looking for? I live in Lampasas and we have a small hospital here but we are close to Killeen, Fort Hood, Burnet, which also have hospitals. Have you been to visit Lampasas yet?

I think they are looking at an RN job in the prison? So probably not the hospital. I've driven through Lamesa quite a few times, on the way to Lubbock form San Angelo. Seems Ok to me. They have some chain restaurants. Taco Villa and Pinnochio's Pizza(if they still have that)..both nostalgic for me we used to have them here in San Angelo lol.

well yall......the job in Lamesa area is just PERFECT for me. i just wish i could get a heads up on what to expect in that area from someone with insider info. i AM going there end of the month to look for myself but am finding very little when i google..........if it is quintessential Texas....with country folk, small town living, cowboy life, and preferably not too inundated with hispanics only because i dont want to ever life in a town like i do now where i cannot even communicate with most people i run into because i cant speak spanish, and therefore not a big social circle etc.......(so dont even play the race card with me-i just want to blend in, ok?)

Lamesa is one of the towns I deliver to. It's ok in town, some nice neighborhoods. There's a vet serving horses and cattle in town so must be some livestock in the area but couldn't say where because town is surrounded by cotton fields. More so than just about anywhere and Spring dust storms are very bad. The folks in the area are down home friendly, maybe more so than any other town I deliver to. I deliver to the prison regular and it is a large facility. Both Lubbock and Midland are reasonable drives on good highways. Hispanics probably make up at least half the town, but having lived in McAllen myself I'd say most folks here are pretty laid back. Don't get bad vibes from the Hispanic folk here, vast majority are much more Texan than Mexican. Hope this helps.
