Memorial Day, 2011

Following WWII, a native Texan gained fame as "the most decorated hero of WWII." Medal of Honor winner Audey Murphy became one of Hollywood's brightest stars after the war. In the 25 years he spent in Hollywood, Murphy made 44 feature films, 33 of them Westerns. Additionally, he was a successful song writer of C&W music. His two biggest hits were "Shutters and Boards" and "When the Wind Blows in Chicago".

By strange coincidence, considering the day today:
Quote:
Shortly after noon on May 28, 1971, during Memorial Day weekend, Murphy was killed when his private plane crashed into Brush Mountain, near Catawba, Virginia, 20 miles west of Roanoke, Virginia. The pilot and four other passengers were also killed.

Audey Murphy was a great man, and I second your thoughts.

The VA named their hospital in San Antonio after Audie Mruphy. Since DH goes there for appointments and such, we tend to think about him from time to time.

I'm assuming your husband is a veteran Lee W. We thank you for his service.

I would also like to point out another famous native Texan, Doris Miller.

Quote:
He was the first African American to be awarded the Navy Cross, the third highest honor awarded by the US Navy at the time, after the Medal of Honor and the Navy Distinguished Service Medal (today the Navy Cross precedes the Distinguished Service Medal).
Doris Miller - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

He was also portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr in Pearl Harbor

A monument is currently in works for him to be built along the Brazos River in Waco.

How many recall the Vietnam era photo ( I believe from Life magazine) of the young tank commander lying on top of the tank being given plasma by his comrade? He was one of the many young east Texans who died in a conflict whose controversy still has the ability to wound hearts and minds. The soldier's name was Eugene Hodges. He was my neighbor.

On this Memorial Day, thanks to all our Nation's young men and women who have served, fought and died for our freedoms.
