Summers are miserable down on the Texas coast...which is all relative....I'd rather be broiling in Rockport than Baghdad. However long you spend looking around, just get here safely to do it. Preferably during hunting season
Thank you for your service.

Check out Lake Jackson and Brazosport. They're not that far from Freeport.

One upside to that area is you have good direct freeway access to a large city (Houston) and a VA hospital (DeBakey, at the Texas Medical Center). Hunting areas are still a close drive as well, and the Brazosport area has some city amenities.
"Brazosport" is not a city but is a collective name for the condensed cities of Lake Jackson, Clute, Freeport and Richwood - you can go out of one and into the other and hardly notice.

i think the best time to visit would be in mid summer...because if you think you can handle it, then the rest of the year is WONDERFUL weather. thats the ONLY good thing i can say about coastal and South Texas..., and of course, really really good mexican food

If you're looking for ideas on when to visit the area, please don't do it in the summer times. The best times are between late October - April.

Port Aransas, Portland, and Aransas Pass (near Corpus Christi) are nice.
I also like Port Isabel near South Padre Island.

My parents spent four or five years in the Harlingen, Texas area. They lived in a fifth wheel so they could get up and move anytime they wanted. They also spent one season at Summerville. Not too much there but peace and quiet.

Stay Safe Brother,
As a retired Nam Vet, I like two things, a usable PX, BX, and a LOT of land between my place and my fencelines, so I live on my own acerage with my own airstrip 90 miles east of El Paso. You DON't want to be here, there is NO water. I agree, that San Antonio is a real nice City with a "town feel". I am thinking of building a small house boat, and mooring it in Rockport, but be aware, that is nothing more than a small fishing village, with the accompanying intellect. One more thing, San Antonio has a first rate V.A. Hospital, I have been there once on an emergency, and the care was first rate.
Trust no one who doesn't wear the same uniform, stay safe, HOOAH. Brie

My question what coastal towns would you recommend? I am not planning on living right on the beach but would like to be within a 20-30 minute ride of a good beach area.
Additional things I am looking for:
Town 8000+ in population
Good public hunting area within a 2 hour drive (Turkey, Dove, Waterfowl)
Safe community
Winter temps above 50 degrees if possible
Thank you Troy

I've been to about every coastal town. Galveston too much crime and too many hurricanes. Port Lavaca is nice but isolated. Rockport has the cleanest beach - and is a casual friendly town- way more men than women though. Corpus is nice, except for the refineries. When you go much further south you are isolated. Raymondville is horrible and not on the coast. Port Mansfield small and isolated.
Ingleside on the Bay is pretty nice - check out that area- bargains as the Navy is leaving.
