Perry vetoes texting while driving bill, 22 others (http://www.statesman.com/news/texas/perry-vetoes-texting-while-driving-bill-22-others-1546573.html - broken link)

Yeah, right...making people accountable and not drive while blind is certainly an over-reach of government. riiiight....they just need to be educated! Actually, why don't they just make a vehicle equipped with some gizmo that won't allow people to drive while texting. Oh yeah, that is probably more government wanting to take over our minds too, (sorry bad idea). Hmmm, Perry for President anyone?

At some point we need to stop hoping the government will rule every aspect of our lives.
People need to grow up, even adults, and be accountable for their actions.

Best comment on the Stateman's site:

over reach? this is the man that has pushed for toll roads and the massive "corridor" which would have been a huge imminent domain land grab by the government.

Heard on talk radio today that while Perry has a 54% approval rating in Texas, his approval rating for Prez is only 9%. Darn it, was hoping he would be gone...

ETA. Before anyone slams me, I voted for Debra Medina and will do so again if she decides to run. Awesome conservative!

How can people be held accountable unless it's against the law?

If there are no laws against it, then it's basically a persons choice to do whatever they want, including endangering other drivers.

It's not "ruling every aspects of our lives" to make certain actions illegal. That's just silly. Would you also want to abolish all laws that prohibit drinking and driving? We make unsafe driving illegal in many ways, by setting speed limits, by putting up stop signs, by establishing school zones, by prohibiting drunk driving. No one argues that these are all good ideas.

But telling people it's illegal to text is "ruling every aspect of our lives". Wow. Flawed logic.

This also goes beyond the safety aspect of using your phone while driving. The amount of traffic that could / should be paying attention to the road and driving, keeping the flow of traffic moving, are now playing with their phones. Whether they are talking, texting, whatever, they are not paying attention, which just leads to even worse traffic congestion, and more sitting at lights.

There are laws against reckless driving, which texting certainly falls under. I abhor Governor Good Hair with a white burning passion, and think that texting while driving is absolutely stupid, but that doesn't change that fact. If we need a law against texting while driving, then we also need specific laws against eating while driving, and listening to the radio while driving, and, for that matter, having passengers (especially children) in the vehicle while driving - all things that could lead to reckless driving in the wrong hands. Better we should enforce the laws we now have in existence that quite suitably cover the situation than to make new ones, whose only purpose is to make busy work for legislators (and perhaps garner them a few votes from the nanny crowd) so it will look like we NEED all these laws.

Fewer laws, suitably enforced, would do the trick much better than more laws that can't be enforced.

I'm more interested in the disconnect in Perry's brain between laws against texting while driving being micromanaging and a law requiring a woman to get a sonogram before getting an abortion not being micromanaging. I think he's slipped another gear somewhere, and/or he REALLY thinks his supporters are stupid not to be able to tell those are both micromanaging.

Apple is developing an application to prevent an iPhone from making a video at a concert. We don't need no stinkin' gubmint to stop us from living.

We definitely needed that law - Perry's IQ must be about minus 10...
