I have been offered a job opportunity in SA, moving from a suburb about 90 miles out of Houston. The job opportunity is great. It will be a significant increase in income. I am also rather bored with my current employment, but I was resigned to stay the next 6 years, until my boys go off to college. The new job is located near the airport and I found a great school district for my boys to attend. The cost of living is a bit higher in that area, which will reduce the impact of the increase. Here are the drawbacks: I have two boys (ages 12 and 13) in middle school. I left Houston after their births to raise them near family. We have been in my hometown ever since. It is comfortable, and we have a wonderful network of friends and family. It's the only reason that we survived the divorce 3 years ago. I also help my mother, who has a terminal lung disease. Based on those facts, I want to pass up the opportunity. However, to complicate matters, my ex lost his job, so he no longer pays child support, no longer exercises his rights of visitation, and no longer covers them on insurance. When you add up those items, my current salary has, in a sense, significantly decreased. We will have to downsize our house, which the boys are willing to do, and make some adjustments to our standard of living to pay for colleges/cars.

I'm just not sure how to weigh the financial aspects against the personal aspects. I know that we will survive either way. The things that we have experienced over the years proves that. But which change is healthier for us? Do I move my children for more financial stability and possibly a better school district OR do I make adjustments to our current living situation to create financial stability here?

I would look at my children and thier needs. i would take the job in SA that provides a better education and stability for the kids. To me, the first responsibility is to the kids. Family is important, but as cold as it sounds, your first obligation is to the boys.
You will only be 3 hours away from family. That's far but not really that far.
All of this is my opinion and what I would do.
