Houston or Dallas first, Austin last of the three. Austin is the more expensive city in Texas.

it all depends on the business
the money you have to invest
and other variables

there are plenty of businesses that fail in any of those three cities in a year

I would say San Antonio and Tyler could also be possibles

Yes... what type of "Small Business" are you starting? Is it retail - meaning you'll have a traditional storefront? Or is it more administrative - where you'll have a more professional office environment? Or, is it more commercial - where you'll need more of a "flex-space" industrial & office? Or, is it just yourself (for now) where you'll be working from your home/car & networking?

Each of these factors will have a big impact on where you decide to start the business, assuming you have the opportunity to choose.

Small business do better in medium sizes citys like Nacogdoches/Lufkin area citys around 35,000 and both citys having starting up small business that are doing well. When you go to big citys like Dallas or Houston big business eat up small ones with all the competition. So try the oldest city in Texas Nacogdoches,I reside here ask me any thing.

Smile business

Canton, TX home of the First Monday flea market is a good place to set up shop if you have a good product, portable type products and can stand out. I know quite a few people who live off of what they make there one weekend a month. Some come from several states away. But it all depends on what you are selling and location you get there. Without more details of your business hard to know if it could be a good fit to you. Many have small shops in neighboring towns (or just online) as well. Be memorable. The failure rate for small businesses is tough. Good luck!

Out of those three, I would venture to guess probably Houston or Dallas. Folks do tend to overlook some of the other surprising options. For example (from Wiki): "San Angelo has consistently been ranked by many publications and rankings as one of the best small cities for business. It has been consistently ranked as one of the "Best Places for Business and Careers" by Forbes Magazine. In 2009 CNN Money ranked San Angelo as one of the best cities to launch a small business. In 2010 Kiplinger's Personal Finance named San Angelo as one of the "Best Cities of the Next Decade".
