Texas Regional Affiliation Poll --Let's get 'er done!
Greetings fellow Texans...
Much as I -- and many others -- would just like the question to be put into the closet and let the moths eat it -- it never completely goes away. It keep making an appearance and causing the same old argument among the same people.
It recently re-appeared, once again. Some of us "Texas Regulars" are thinking "oh gawd no...not again." I am so damn sick of this subject as I know many others are as well..."
SO, my reason for starting this thread is just to -- in a sense -- as we say in Texas, just "git 'er done." That is, take a poll and see what most of us think. Naturally, it will not be anymore scientifically verified than would any that a TV news or print media conducted. And too, there is no way to verify whether or not those who participate are native Texans or just people from out of the state who reply. At best, it might give SOME kind of indication as to how many here feel on the matter...even if not in the least, verifiable. So let's just go for it, reply, have it out again if we need to (which hopefully we don't) and put this topic to bed once and for all.
But still, KEEP IN MIND THERE ARE MULTIPLE OPTIONS ON THIS QUESTION. THAT IS, YOU CAN CHECK MORE THAN ONE RESPONSE! Also, the purely "West" reply refers to the state being connected with those so defined by the Census Bureau as "West". Same as "South" refers to those defined by the same bureau, as well.
Southwestern except for East Texas and I'd draw the line at Paris---Sulphur Springs--Canton---Athens---Palestine----Huntsville----Houston. Houston you could say was an old southern city but has been so urbanized it doesn't really fit your general regional classifications.

Just to note that is the reason why there are multiple options on this poll. You don't just have to vote for one. Yes, the general intent is the state as a whole so far as what those on this forum think (which again, is not going to be scientific by any means). For instance, the "Southwestern" listing has three options. Southwest as in "western South", "southern West" or just generic "Southwest" (which can mean Texas alone, or with a combination of the above). Likewise, one can say both South and West. Or either with another classification. Something like that.
One thing seems sure to this point: Texas is TEXAS! Which we all agree on, anyway! LOL
So Southern means unurbanized????? I did not know that. Learn something new every day. Guess they have been short changing the south because we are gonna have to add, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, Nebraska, The Dakotas, Kansas, etc to the south cause they are the least urbanized states.
I'm so tired of this discussion (or particular aspects of it and the way it is conducted on this forum, really) that for the most part I've simply stopped participating. But I had to vote in the poll. Vote #1: Texas is Texas. Vote #2: If it HAS to be part of one of the other regions of the United States, rather than its own region (which it's large enough to be), then Southwest.
I voted Texas is Texas and everone should. I also voted Western South and South Central. Can't say the state in its entirety is strictly Southern. People west of Pecos and south of Victoria does not look at themselves as Southerners and even Austin and SA is becoming less and less Southern with each passing year.

Absolutely! Although -- as is right on the money -- that answer is the one we all agree on -- it seems a bit surprising that, given 14 people have voted on the poll, that the "Texas is TEXAS" reply is not indicated by at least 14 people! LOL But as is generally the case, I think these "multiple option polls" can be a bit confusing to some. That is to say, one CAN vote for more than one option. As you did and I did, and others have.
So I just repeat for those who haven't seen it yet on the OP: Voting for MORE than one answer (or creating your own under "Other") is perfectly permissible!

I voted for multiple options but I didn't choose Texas is Texas even though I believe Texas is Texas.
I did not choose that as an option because almost all the states can claim something similar.
Louisiana is Louisiana, Florida is Florida, Georgia is Georgia, OK is OK, AR is AR etc etc.
Some states are very similar, but those are few
So I chose Texas is Southern and West South Central.Texas being on the border of regions share multiple identities, but it is not unique in that regard.
California, Arizona, Colorado, Oklahoma, Florida, Virginia, Ohio, New York, etc etc are just the same

Good points! Although I have to quibble/add that I think Texas IS a bit different than the others you bring up. That is to say, Texas is really the only one that can be considered a region unto itself simply because it is on the periphery of other regions. IMHO, there are only a few states that can be realistically considered regions in their own right due to unique history/size/geography/culture: Texas, California, and New York. Stretching a bit though, perhaps Florida.
But anyway, of the main three, only Texas is the one whose larger regional affiliation is up for much discussion simply because it IS on the proximity to several major regions. There is no way California could be considered anything but West. New York anything but Northeast. Florida? Well, it might be Northeast if it wasn't so far south! LOL
Seriously though, Texas? As you know, to me (and I know you agree), Texas is essentially a Southern state in all the important considerations. BUT, I do acknowledge that because it IS on the periphery of the undeniable South, that its regional affliliation is not always so clear cut as a California and/or New York which, again, are totally surrounded by other states in their respective regions. I hope that makes sense.
Oh well, as it is, you and I definitely agree on the basics here. I picked Texas as Texas, Southern, South Central and Southwestern (as in western South!).
