Why not say what YOU like and we can provide suggestions.

The best to me is West Texas, more specifically, Alpine/Fort Davis/Marfa....best climate in the state, and mountains to boot.

I like the national forests of east Texas just for their natural beauty. But I also like Camp Tonkawa, near Abilene for its naked wilderness. But may most significant place in Texas is any where that is the Brazos River. To me it's the line between an eastern bent of Texas from a western bent of Texas.

If you want a great steak with a historical taste, try Lowake, near Brownwood. Living in Abilene, my dad used to take my buds and me camping on the Concho River, near Paint Rock. Saturday night he'd take us to Lowake... life is good. That was in the 50's.

You should visit the Texas Travel Guide. You can even send off for a paper copy and it will ship international. Over two hundred glossy pages of places and things Texas.

And it's FREE ! ! !

Or, view the actual guide online (just discovered this myself)

Big Bend is the most beautiful part of Texas to me. It's huge also, so there's always something new to discover.

Dangit! You beat me to it! Big Bend gets my vote, my favorite place to hike in all of Texas IMO. Although, I have yet to visit Guadalupe Mtn National Park. It is on the to do list!

1. Boca Chica. Just like Padre Island, but there is nobody there. No permanent residents within about 20 miles, just 2 or 3 transient campers.

2. Sweetwater. I like the countryside around there, and its kind of a funky town with good vibes, as long as you are several blocks away from the interstate ramps.

3. Rita Blanca National Grassland, in the northwest corner, bordering on NM and OK. Very open, quiet, unspoiled. A couple of little public waysides where you can camp rustic, all by yourself.
