I can see Texas sustaining itself much longer than other states if the entire economy of America took a dump. and I'm not just saying this because I'm a Texan either.

Texas is almost a self-sustaining state really. Most of the things we need in life, we make right here in Texas. from food, economy, vehicles to entertainment. I really don't see another state holding its own if the economy collasped today.

what say you? What state would you run to if the economy collapsed tomorrow? and would you feel safe there. ??

The only thing that bothers me about riding out collapse in Texas, is the huge federal military presence here. San Antonio is like one giant military base as it is. If, hypothetically, Texas were to secede, what do you think would happen with respect to the federal military here? I know we have the Texas State Guard, but the big bases here would be a major issue. Would we have a Fort Sumter-like event like the one that started the Civil War? Would the military towns be able to make up for the huge economic loss they'd take? It's a very interesting thing to ponder, just for fun.

Intesesting question but Texas would be screwed too and we will all be ruled by the Chinese. The conspiracy theorists claim there are already Chinese troops in Mexico right now.

That very presence makes it highly unlikely that Texas could ever secede if it wanted to. The state is already occupied by Federal troops.

Not that I think Texas ever will or really wants to secede, most Texans are proud Americans.

We are certainly fighting tens of thousands of acres of fires on our own.

Don't think the OP was talking about seceding...not sure where that came from.

But, as economies go, we are integrally tied into the U.S. economy. All that oil and chemical manufacturing down on the coast goes elsewhere. If no one is buying, there goes the gulf coast economy. Also, a decent percentage of our power is supplied by powder river basin coal. If we are talking catastrophic economic failure, were do we get our coal? The differences in U.S. state economies are superficial. If there is wide-spread collapse, Texas will be right there with the rest...

I'm pretty sure most of our food comes from California and Mexico.

Oh, this thread is serious.

If it's a literal nationwide economic collapse, then it's hard to see exactly how the fact that we produce cars will help us if those factories shut down. That is unless you're taking it even further and really talking about an out and out national collapse, people taking over factories, etc, etc.

With regards to secession, I often wonder when those who bring such things up have actually thought through exactly what it means to do such a thing and why it's pretty much beyond practicality. Unless of course we're back to talking about the most extreme form of collapse.
