We are retired (55 and 68) currently living in Phoenix, AZ. We want to include fishing and boating in our retirement, as well as try to hopefully find a better year round climate. (we can escape for 3-4 months a year to get out of excessive humidity or snow if we have to).

Our other priorities are an area that welcomes newcomers and, especially, seniors (we are very open to living in a 55+ community), availability of restaurants (especially ethnic), happy hours and bars, social activities that do not center on church.

As far as fishing, we just like catching lots of fish - no into tournaments or lunkers or any specific variety. Just hanging out on a boat and having fun. We would want a marina within about 15 minutes of our home as we are too old and lazy to trailer and launch the boat each time we want to use it.

I admit our initial sites were set on Florida, but after considering the cost of homeowners insurance, the long summer of humidity and the unavailability of health insurance for me, we've taken it off the plate. We liked Galveston - before Hurricane Ike - but it's ultimately a little sleepy in the off season.

Thoughts and suggestions would be most appreciated.

Fishing is going to be mainly around the coast. And around the coast is humid. No getting around that here.

Newcomers + lots of restaurants including ethnic = Houston

Again, on the coast in Texas you will be dealing with the same issues of long summers, high humidity, and high homeowner insurance costs. That being said, Galveston is probably the most interesting, historic and least sleepy of the coastal cities in Texas (except for South Padre at Spring Break, but I'm thinking that's probably not your scene.) Port A and Rockport are other options, but they'll have less going on than Galveston.... they are more for the beaches and quiet.

...
I'd beg to differ with this opinion. Freshwater fishing is found all over the state, esp. in the eastern half of the state. Do a little research and you'll find that there are quite a few lakes that offer great year-round fishing for all types of fish including bass, catfish, crappie, blue gill, etc.. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website is a great place to start.

Working boat ramps are at a premium right now, but it won't always be that way. Look into Lake Tawakoni east of Dallas. Not too awful far from restaraunts in Rockwall and Rowlett. On the coast, you might consider somewhere like Seabrook on Galveston Bay.

Canyon Lake is where I'd go. Near San Antonio. I don't know how the fishing is but the area around the Lake is pretty nice. Not much for foreign food either, unless mexican counts.

Port Mansfield on the lower Texas coast sounds like what you may be looking for..

Some of the best salt water fishing in Texas (comparable to Florida)
Small and sleepy fishing village (not commercial fishing)
Caters to seniors (Retirement community)
Nice weather. Since it is right on the coast does not experience the extremely hot temperatures that the inland areas do.
Extremely low cost of living (compared to other areas)
About the only drawback is the lack of shopping and related amenities (such as restaurants and movie theaters) but if this not a big deal then no matter.
Oh and almost forgot, you might see the occasional hurricane in which case you can always move inland for a short while.
