4th & 5th generation German Texans would know that BBQ is something one eats.....not a place to meet.

What a neat and original thread! Just a few random thoughts/input...

1. I took German in college (at that time, a foriegn language could be substituted for the math requirements), but to say I became much more than passably able to translate simple written sentences would be pure Texas BS!
However, the professor was a very conservative fellow and because I wrote a personal column for the school rag which often contained right-wing themes, he and I became friends of sorts. Which is the only reason I can account for the D's I got as opposed to the F's I deserved! Seriously, I really wish now I had put more effort into learning the language!

2. While certain areas of the Hill Country are for sure the "hearth" of German communities in Texas, don't forget that there are several of note in North Texas. Muenster is one, as is Windthorst...

3. I am surprised that none of my fellow Texans of the "classic" country music school have brought up "Luckenbach"
