Marfa has been mentioned several times in this thread already. As has Kerrville, which I will elaborate on here.

Kerrville has the Museum of Western Art and the annual Kerrville Art Fair and other events year around.

Clifton....beautiful Hill country....close to DFW and easy drive in any direction, DFW, Panhandle, Corpus, Austin
