Best friend's wife when to HS at a magnet school (in Weslaco i think). She said it's a cultural thing down there for girls to get a beat down by other girls. She was threatened so many times that she moved to SA to live with her grandparents. Enroll yours in boxing now, they'll need it.

There are no magnet schools in Weslaco, only regular and alternative. If she went to alternative school, the beat down thing would happen anywhere in the country. Wouldn't make a difference the location.

She probably means the magnet schools in Mercedes, which is right next to Weslaco. It's South Texas ISD.

That's correct. She lived in Weslaco and went to the magnet school in Mercedes.

I appreciate everyones input. My husband has been down there for 3 weeks now. He seems to really like it except for some of the peoples crazy driving and crossing the border at night to come back into McAllen. I still am worried about our girls fitting in. If anyone can tell me what area you think would be a better fit for us I would appreciate it. One daughter will be going into 8th grade next year and the other into 6th.

Hello everyone: My family and I are moving to mcallen this coming november. We are from Monterrey, Mexico but we have lived in Cinncinati and in Indianapolis for the last 9-10 years. Being so far away from our families and friends we decided to move closer Monterrey is a 3-hr drive from mcallen). However, even though I know mcallen (shopping there is very common for people in Mty), I had never stayed there for more than 2 days and we are not sure where to live. My husband got a very good offer as a physician (the offices and clinic are in Donna) and I will be looking for a position
too. Does anybody have a recommendation? Also, I'm trying to register my son (1 grade) in a school called Oratory which is in Pharr, does anybody knows anything about the school? I like it because is bilingual and it is supposed to be very good academically. To kabrown: I know how you must feel about being the minority, but don't be afraid of change, I have learned so many things in this period in my life: when I realized that the world is not this little universe around me where everything is perfect. I try to teach my children (mostly my oldest who is 6y) that people are different in color, beliefs, custums, etc and that it is ok. And about being accepted: there will be people accepting you without a problem and those who maybe won't like it happens everywhere!! I've been there. I wish you luck and if you decide to live there we can communicate and maybe meet down there. Let me know if I can be of help. Good luck.
I would appreciate anyone's input.
Patricia

no, sorry. the problem never lied with me. i had an open mind when i came here. as soon as someone met me, saw what i looked like and heard my texas twang, they would automatically say "you're not from around here, are you?" and when i couldn't speak spanish, they automatically didnt "trust" me. they would FIND reasons to complain, no matter how hard i tried to please, and would threaten to sue (very verbal about it). i have never dealt with that in all of my career. i refuse to deal with it another day. by the way, there is a GOOD reason why er docs malpractice insurance triples south of the nueces river, and the stats show that 75 percent of er docs in the valley have been sued. that's what you get for working in a very indigent area.........people trying to make money off of you.

I thought you went to Kingsville. McAllen's about two hours south of there and a much different city.

I was raised in Weslaco and I have to say that this statement is TOTALLY false! I NEVER had a problem with getting "beat down" by other girls. It's like any other place -- respect others and they'll respect you. Could there possibly be a reason why she was threatened "so many times"?
