Default Looking around East Texas, any suggestions?

So i've been looking around for a place to live in East Texas that's not to far from cities such as Dallas or Houston. so if anyone has some suggestions based on the stuff I listed below that would be great.

Specifics
-place where I can own 10 to 20 acres
-place where I can Hunt and Fish
-A place with Southern charm
-price range 100,000 to 300,000
-not far from either Dallas or Houston
-possible for me to own a horse

Southern Charm? Where are you moving from exactly? Texas is not really Southern like Mississippi or some place like that. It is more Southwest, but really just its own state with its own vibe. Not far from Dallas or Houston, what do you consider not far? There are lots of places like you describe, but the price you list and amount of land doesn't seem to match up. That much land and a house on it might be expensive. Chances are you would be 2-3 hours from either city.

And East Texas, well I would not describe anything about any of that area as "Charming".

I know you listed specifics, but that still would cover most of East Texas.
Lufkin/Nacogdoches area would fit. I personally like the Athens/Jacksonville/Tyler area....
There are hardly any restrictions imposed by counties, so you could do or have whatever you wanted on your place.

I think most of the rural areas around Longview might match your criteria. There are plenty of lakes and hunting areas around. Depending on exactly where you lived, Dallas would be around 2 to 3 hours away and Houston 3 to 4 hours away.

East Texas more Southwestern than Southern??? I'd love to hear you explain this.

But to the OP, there are several places in the region that meet all of your requirements. I seem to remember hearing good things about Rusk, Jefferson, and Daingerfield. How big or small would you like the town to be?

Beaumont is charming in its own way, but it's pretty industrial. It's also more suburban oriented, due to it's size, versus the more gentle, small town atmosphere you get in the rest of East Texas.

It's also not as nice looking as the further north parts of ET.

I would love for you to explain how you didn't comprehend what I wrote.

I never said East Texas is Southwestern. I said Texas is more Southwestern. Texas is a large state. Now go up and re-read the sentence. Okay, good.

Places that are traditionally thought to have Southern Charm, you know, like Savannah, places in Mississippi, etc, well Texas isn't really like them. As I said, it has its own vibe. Overall, I like Texas, but it is different from the South or the Old South.

And I lived in East Texas for a long time, I know what it is like. There is nothing charming about it in my opinion. It is very backwoodsy and kind of like the town on True Blood, minus the hot supernatural beings. Yes, there are the Baptists and the meth cookers, and the FBI recently broke up the biggest US dog fighting and animal cruelty ring there, but anyway.......

East Texas is a large area. If you are talking about Longview and the surrounding small towns, I think it would be fine, many people like it, but I would only recommend someone look there if they are a bible belty person who thinks the Olive Garden is a fancy restaurant, and has minimal exposure to the rest of the world.

Have a Nice Day!

Well, this thread is about EAST Texas, so you'll have to excuse my misinterpretation of your statement, or maybe I'll just excuse your reckless going off on a tangent.

As it is, there is no one "vibe" that can be found throughout the entire state. East Texas has its own vibe, and it's most definitely a strong southern one. The region absolutely has more in common with towns in Mississippi or Louisiana than it does with most of Texas.

As to whether or not you find the area to be charming, that is your opinion, so I won't argue with it. You're also entitled to make generalizing statements about ET, but they can easily be argued.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your night, as well.
