Default Moving to Mcallen/Brownsville

Hi all,

I'm a young professional moving to the RGV for a job opportunity. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on where to live. I am looking to rent for the first year I am there.

I haven't had much luck finding newer/nice apartments to rent from. There is a new luxury apartment complex called Plantation at Sharyland (http://www.sharylandplantation.com/d...Flyer-2011.jpg) in South McAllen. The complex seems very nice and rent is on the high side for McAllen. However, the location makes it only less than 3 miles from the Mexican border. What are your thoughts on Sharyland area? Am I being overly cautiously about the proximity to the border or is that irrelevant?

Thank you so much,

Madison

YES.. You will be just fine in that area. It is quite nice and upscale. It does not matter that it is only 3 miles from the border. You are still in the US. I work even closer to the border and I travel through that exact same area every day. Nice cars, nice houses etc.. Is there any particular reason you chose that area? There are a lot of other areas in McAllen to choose from many even nicer than Plantation.

LOL--it doesn't matter if you're 10 feet or 100 miles from the border. I'm with gguerra. Totally irrelevant. The Sharyland area has a good PR firm. I would suggest you come to town & look around. What area are you going to be working near?

One of the key "rules of thumb" about the Mexican gangs... as long as you don't dabble in their trades, you have as likely of a chance of getting involved as anyone really does anywhere else. Just keep your nose clean (literally), and stay out of trouble. If you do venture across the border, stay in the main shopping/tourist areas, and not wander off.

Follow those simple rules, you will do just fine

Thanks. I chose that area based on proximity to job.

What other areas would you recommend I look at?

Where exactly is your job opportunity? McAllen and Brownsville are an hour from one another.

+1 on those questions.

I moved here to McAllen about two years ago and can offer you some advice based upon your answers to the questions above.

Shoot me a PM. I don't check the threads often.

Default mcallen

hi Im new here so im going to ask questions.
My wife and i are thinking of moving to mcallen tx for a job i was offered.
I like the fact that it is close to the cost Island and its warm .
I can not find any material on rv camp ground or reviews as i will be camping there in trailer till we find a place. It also bring me to next question Being new to mcallen were would be the best place to live thats not overly priced.I am used to paying 900 mth here so if i can stay that area i would be happy. As for the job it will be at Clark CHEVY.
I would like to know how safe it is as My wife Is Blonde.
No kids and she was raised in new york.
My ive live in colorado most my life .
Any information you can tell me would help in the decision of moving there.
Thank ken

RV parks abound although this time of year all of the "Winter Texans" are here. You should still have not problem finding one.

So your wife is blond? That could be a problem.. Not really just kidding. It doesn't matter.

$900 a month will rent you a really nice apartment/condo or a slightly older smaller home. Rent on a 3/2 nice home averages $1200 a month.

There are some "bad" areas but you can easily tell by looking at them.. Most areas south of Expressway 83 west of 10th street I would stay away from. There are "pockets" north of the expwy 83 that are not so desirable but for the most part it is OK. You will be here for a while before you rent a place so you can look and ask around before making a decision.
