Here's the deal. I'm retiring from the Army 30 Jun 12 and I've been considering moving to Texas. I've done a lot of research on the cities in Texas to include the Fort Hood area, Austin area, SA area and Dallas. Iím starting to narrow it down to SA and Austin, but need some help in trying to figure out which city is the better choice.

Not really looking to live in the city limits of either city, so which suburb is the better choice? Looking for one that has diversity as well as a good cost of living rate. Good schools is a must (have a 16 yr son who'll be a SR). What is the job outlook like? I'm in HR field and my wife is a hairstylist but transitioning to Medical Administrative Specialist.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would say San Antonio for your work and school needs/wants. I don't know what suburbs are best for you. i would say to rent for 6 or 12 months. While you are here you can learn what areas fit your needs and likes before you buy a place.

San Antonio is more diverse, and has a booming medical research field. It's also more family and military oriented. As far as city vs. suburbs are concerned, both cities are so spread out you could be living on the outskirts of either city, and be living in the country persay. As I sit here, I can see deer roaming in the field across from my house, and a golf course on the other side, and I do not even live outside the outer loop, either. I do not know much about Austin area schools, but here in SA, NEISD is the best district. Outside of SA, Helotes and Boerne have good schools. I believe Boerne Champion H.S. received the 4A (second largest) award for best athletics and academics in the state. Note the almost all of SA and Austin public schools will have at least 2,000 students. The job outlook in SA is still somewhat hurting but we are in better shape than nearly all major cities in the country.
