That is a GREAT map, Solytaire! And I promise I don't say that just because the futile attempt of my own mentioned earlier mostly agreed with the one you did! LOL
Seriously, though, one of the things neat about the basic map you used is that you can divide along county lines and a little more detail is within! Not that I am knowlegable enough to do it with such precision, but only that it can be done!
In making the "mental map" as to how to do it, the biggest problem I have is limiting it to 5 divisions (that allowable by the Annexation agreement).
That is, I have a general idea of East, West, Southwest, North, and Central Texas...but the Houston area is the real problem. It really isn't East Texas, but it is much more so than it is Central Texas. But if Houston is included in East Texas, it would almost stand to reason it would be the "capital" over Tyler...which much more represents East Texas. On the other hand, it makes no sense to stretch Central Texas to the Houston area to stay within the confines of a 5 state division. And it definitely wouldn't be part of the far west/South Texas "Tex-Mex" LOL
Hmmmm...I would like to re-negotiate the Annexation Agreement to make allowable to go to 6 states instead of 5. (just kidding).

Yeah, Houston was a real pickle for me too..I went through about 4 different variations of the Houston region. Because in a lot of ways I wanted to include it in a separate Gulf Coast sector. But, I dont consider it Gulf Coast in the same way that Corpus Christi is Gulf Coast. Houston reminds me of a Southern Gulf Coast city, whereas Corpus Christi possesses a South Texas Gulf Coast aura. And I think Southeast Texas is just a tinge different than Northeast Texas, because of its dense foliage and noticeable cajun influence. So based on my travels, from Huntsville/Conroe, to Houston to Beaumont and all points in between the Cajun flair grows more apparent the further southeast you travel.

Houston is most definitely Tex-Mex, but more 2nd generation vs. S/W Texas. It's 40% Hispanic + another half-million undocumented/illegal would put it at 50% easy. IMO it's a meeting point for south-central (far west/NW areas), south (coastal), east (far north/NE areas), and southeast (far east areas).
If you could divide it 6 ways it'd make life easier. Or extend SE Texas in Solytaire's map a bit farther west to take in Bay City and maybe Victoria and College Station and bring the northern border farther south.

Sure...
The Red would represent Northeast Texas---this region is culturally and topographically similar to Southeast Texas save for the fact that it has little to no cajun culture found in SE Texas and S. Louisiana.
Blue of course would be SE Texas...The more dense fauna, and cajun flair would distinguish it from NE Texas or "Middle" Texas/
Purple would be homogeneously termed a "Southwestern/International Transition Zone", that I dont think is culturally and to some extent topographically nor Demographically similar to ANY other region of Texas.
The Yellow region would be what I'd term "Middle" (NOT "CENTRAL", think Middle Tennessee) Texas. I think, with the exception of topography this region is far more similar as a whole than different; culturally, that is.
And of course the Green region would become West Texas which, YES!, for the sake of argument, will include the panhandle region..because once again I think, culturally, the areas in the Green region are very similar thru and thru. And once in the Green Region, one is truly out of the recognizable Southland.

I debated about how to split Texas up for a couple of days now. Here is my only conclusion on how she should be split:
I know its less than 3 ways, and not following in with the original rules of the discussion, but that is about the only way I can cut her in good conscience.
Let the Republic live again.
