Saw this thread on here about San Angelo neighborhoods:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/texas...hborhoods.html

We are thinking of moving to San Angelo area from Massachusetts. We lived in Houston 15 years ago for just one year. Didn't like the humidity in Houston, but liked Austin and San Antonio.

The area in San Angelo where we saw a house is in the northwest area (near Carlsbad). Is this mostly farming and country-like??? Is this considered a "safe" area?

Also wondering about the school systems. It looks like the Grape Creek district, but I'm not sure. Our son has Asperger's (high functioning autism), but is in the mainstream classroom in Massachusetts with an IEP. I have been trying to find information on how the Special Education system works in TX and it's SO much different than here.

Any links or general information would be greatly appreciated.

San Angelo doesn't really have any "unsafe" areas, although there are neighborhoods that you wouldn't want to live in because, relatively speaking, they would be considered the 'hood. We are a military family, been in San Angelo for 3 years and have loved it here. Great place for families. But you need to know that it's pretty country. Folks are simple, really friendly. If you gravitate toward "sophistication," this is not the place for you. But the pace of life is slow and steady and there are some great restaurants, parks, and pretty decent schools. The shopping is terrible. You can get what you need but much of what you may want is in the bigger cities. Northwest is safe. It'll be very rural in the area you're speaking of. Most folks who like rural but want access to the city with great schools look in the Wall school district. It's a small community with cotton fields and ranches and the school district gets rave reviews. I know that Wall does well accommodating ADHD kids, and many parents with waivers for the school district fight like heck to keep their kids in Wall because the teachers are excellent and work hard with special needs children.
Grape Creek is not bad, just country. Like, horses roaming around country. Depends what you like. But I know a couple of families with kids in Grape Creek and they don't complain. My kids are in the city school district--Bowie Elementary and Glenn Middle. Good schools overall.

Grape Creek ISD is rural and very small. If your kids want to show sheep/cattle in 4H/FFA, then that's where you want to live. You will probably have better luck with services for autism in San Angelo ISD and Wall ISD.

Where is the closest large airport, for direct flights from other areas? Looks like my family would fly into Dallas and then fly to the smaller airport in San Angelo. Is that my best option?
