Hello Everyone. My husband passed away and left me in a nightmare position money wise. I own the land. however I'm going into foreclosure as we speak. my question is should I take a loan out on the land and how? I live in Texas. I'm also looking for a new start out of Texas. I'm looking toward Evanston, IL or Valparaiso, IN for college. Please help me.

For the First time in my life I don't know what to do to save my house from all the bills I didn't know he had. You name it he had it. My husband took care of everything and man have I learned a valuable lesson. He was also very abusive; when he died we were in a domestic violence shelter. I want you to know I will rise from this.

You will probably get better advice in this forum. http://www.city-data.com/forum/personal-finance/

Start a new thread there and explain your situation in more detail. Are you going into foreclosure for debts that you are a cosigner on? or are they all for your husband. If they are for your husband you may be able to walk away from them if you were not a cosigner. Regardless, people in that other forum will probably be able to offer you better advice.

Best wishes, CptnRn

I understand that you are new at this, but I'll try to be helpful.

First, as Capt above suggested, there is a Finance Forum where you will find more people conversant in these kinds of issues, as most of what you're asking is not unique to Texas.

Second, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. To properly advise you, respondents would need to know general information about the property in question. Is it a city or country property, is it mostly land with a house, or just a house on a lot, is there an outstanding mortgage or equity, etc. Also, a general picture of your finances: Whether you have substantial debts, child responsibilities, what is the value of your property? Was there a will, or was he intestate, and are there any challenges to the estate? In what way was it a "nightmare"?
