UT is scooping up 332 acres of land just outside the 610 loop with plans for a Research & Collaborative campus of their own (different from the TMCi3 "double helix" research & collaborative campus that was recently announced)..

Quote:
UT is buying 300 acres of land in southwest Houston that will be home not to a full campus, but to a center for collaboration and research, McRaven said.

"It's the fourth largest city in the nation. it has an international footprint. it has the best in energy and engineering and medical," McRaven said of Houston. "Why wouldn't we be in Houston is the question."

Wonderful that a 58 story has been approved. Terrible that THIS 58 story building has been approved. What an ugly building.

Luckily the initial renderings almost never resemble the final product, but it sure was an ugly rendering, and right next to one of Houston's most affluent neighborhoods.

The Federal Aviation Administration has conducted an aeronautical study under the provisions of 49 U.S.C., Section 44718 and if applicable Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations, part 77, concerning:
Structure: Location: Latitude: Longitude: Heights:
Building HI FORUM TOWER Dallas, TX
32-47-23.00N NAD 83 96-48-25.00W
420 feet site elevation (SE)
1080 feet above ground level (AGL) 1500 feet above mean sea level (AMSL)
Initial findings of this study indicate that the structure as described exceeds obstruction standards and/or would have an adverse physical or electromagnetic interference effect upon navigable airspace or air navigation facilities. Pending resolution of the issues described below, the structure is presumed to be a hazard to air navigation.
If the structure were reduced in height so as not to exceed 378 feet above ground level (798 feet above mean sea level), it would not exceed obstruction standards and a favorable determination could subsequently be issued.
To pursue a favorable determination at the originally submitted height, further study would be necessary. Further study entails distribution to the public for comment, and may extend the study period up to 120 days. The outcome cannot be predicted prior to public circularization.
If you would like the FAA to conduct further study, you must make the request within 60 days from the date of issuance of this letter.
