They used to have a place in Glen Rose, but they've closed it the last time I passed through their town square. It was a place called "The Two Grannies" and it was even featured on Bob Phillips' Texas Country Reporter a few years ago. I had been meaning to try it, but it has since been closed.
Now if I want to cheat at getting good home cooking, just between you and I, I still like the occasional Cracker Barrel and the Black-Eyed Pea!

Mary's Cafe in Strawn, Texas. Best and biggest chicken-fried steak in Texas.

Dadgum, someone beat me to Mama's Daughters . GREAT place and good pie. There is Babe's Chicken Dinner House w/ several locations in the Dallas metroplex now w/ the original in Garland. They serve family style and have THE BEST homemade cream corn and biscuits w/ sorghum (YUM). If I don't go for home cookin at any of those two places then it is at my house .
I'll admit there are some places that say they have "home cookin" and it is BAD!! But I don't count those nor let them get in the way of really liking the good places and the good stuff.

Now That's A Slab!
Cowboybootnut, I'll be mightily surprised if your reputation doesn't shoot up about 300 points.
That is one big, honkin' slab of CFS!

Underwoods in Brownwood is the best by far. The Dixie Dog in Tahoka is great as well.

In my area, Dixie-Lakewood is a fave although it's really part of the Black-eyed Pea chain. Other E. Dallas/Downtown alternatives are the AllGood Cafe and Vern's Place, both in Deep Ellum.

Anybody from East and Southeast Texas want to chime in? Haven't heard from you guys yet. Do you have a place you like to go for home cooking that's a best-kept secret? Let's hear from you!

Since Waco is not too far from you now, you might try George-O's. It may not be as good as the place you are talking about, but it ain't bad! Everyone in our group who got the chicken fried steak there was impressed.
