Speaking of good things, Chicken Express in the DFW area sells Dr Pepper fountain drink with real sugar, not the high fructose corn syrup that is in virtually everything these days. Personally, I can tell the difference in taste although my hubby says he can't. At any rate, while real sugar isn't exactly a health product, it's at least not as bad as that high fructose crap, healthwise. You can get the real Dr Pepper in certain stores, too.

Remember when Coke came out with their "new coke"? Didn't go over so they come out and say they're going back to the original coke and they called it "classic coke". Well, it's not original, the original had sugar, classic has the high fuctose syrup.

Great home cooking near and in Abilene:
Home Place in Tuscola. Family style. They don't have a menu, but they serve multiple main dishes and veggies home style. Everyone sits at large tables. You may pass the plates around to folks you don't know, but you will know them by the time dinner is over. They are only open on weekends. Great place!
Allens in Sweetwater. Great fried chicken and home style veggies. Also served family style. Used to be open for lunch only, but I have heard (and not been there then) that they are now open evenings.
I love Mary's in Strawn--you can't beat the chicken fry. It may look disgusting, but it is heaven to eat. (It doesn't look disgusting to me.)
Cook's catfish west of Comanche is wonderful.
And, in Abilene, there are both a Cracker Barrel and a Cotton Patch, but I much prefer the above listed Mom and Pop restaurants.
Just south of Abilene, in Buffalo Gap, is Perini's Ranch, which Texas Monthly has just said is the third best steakhouse in the state. They serve family style meals on the weekends, and they are very good.
Of course I grew up in a household where Mom thought the four food groups were fried meat, fried vegetables, gravy, and bread.

Oh, and how could I forget, driving back to Abilene from Stephenville once, my wife and I stopped at the Boomtown Cafe in Desdemona. Surprisingly good home cooking--especially their home-made pies.

Good post, JamesAbilene. We need to find out about the places that not too many people know about. I might be interested in looking at those places on my next trip out there.

Hey lonestar, I'm a big fan of real sugar coke. Our Wal-Mart is actually carrying Coke bottled in Mexico, made with sugar! It comes in the classic tall bottles. Good stuff!! Love Dr. P w/Imperial Sugar too. Both have a clean finish with no aftertaste, you can see why it became soooo popular!!

I'd like to see what you guys have to say. Let 'er rip!

Sorry, TR. Y'all. I'm just trying to mix it up.
By the way, do any of the other folks here have any more favorites from Texas in regards to home cooking?? Anything we haven't had here yet that you can share??
