I don't think it was called Montana's in the square. This place I'm talking about wasn't a chain. It may be closed these days, but it was a mom-and-pop-type place and there was a serving line. That much (plus grits and gravy), I remember.

Was it The Nut House? I think they reopened it. Haven't been there but I got their Buttermilk Pie recipe and everyone I make it for just loves it!

Oh and there is also the Koffe Kup in Hico. Its famous for its pies, its ok... it supposedly really famous but its all over prices, like 8 bucks from some eggs and bacon... ONLY
Montana's is sorta a family place, but I love there portion sizes, they give you a huge plater for like 8 bucks.

You may be right. I'm still not sure, but as soon as I can, I'll check on it.

There used to be a Montana's across the street from Tarleton State University in Stephenville. Good food.

And I left out a classic diner in Abilene. The Dixie Pig is located at South 14th and Butternut Street. It just celebrated its 75th anniversary. It is only open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday. Breakfasts are great. Lunches are the old-fashioned plate lunches--usually a choice of chicken fried steak, pork chop, meat loaf, or hamburger steak, and a couple of vegetables and a dessert. The portions are not huge, and the prices are very reasonable. If you watch Diners, Dives, and Drive-ins on the food channel, this place is a contender. Watch the schedule. They close for vacation in June and also close for holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. Just a good old-fashioned family-owned cafe with great breakfasts, good lunches, and great prices.

Alright, coulda or shoulda posted this earlier but I only drop in here now once every month or so!

Try this one: http://www.heritage-village.org/pickett-house.htm

Gotta clean your own table off after the meals and there ain't no variation in the menu. Served like at home ... food is served in large bowls and on platters. Chicken is skillet fried, dumplins are awesome, plenty of pork in the beans and greens. We usuall go after church on Sunday. It is real homecooking like I grew up with and purty good ... not as good as Grandmas, but good. Just wish they had spinach instead of turnip greens ... not my favorite green! Deserts don't do anything for me either! The chicken though is almost perfect ... make ya wannna slap yo mama!

Worth a visit. About an hour and 15-30 minutes NE of Houston.

I'll admit there are some places that say they have "home cookin" and it is BAD!! But I don't count those nor let them get in the way of really liking the good places and the good stuff.
I was going to post about Babe's. I remember when it opened and it was just fried chicken and family style veggies. Then they added CFS and I was in heaven. DSD worked there twice in HS. First time around we were there at least twice a week (tipping was still cheaper than giving her an allowance) and the second time we had to tell her that our waistlines couldn't support the twice weekly visits.

I've heard the catfish, pot roast and rotisserie chicken is good too. Wouldn't know - I only get the CFS.

If your in Austin on a Friday, try the fired catfish and hushpuppies at the Manchaca Fire Hall. It's located about 2 miles East of IH-35 on FM 1626. They open at 5:00 PM and close at 9:00 PM. About 500-1,000 folks show up for all you can eat catfish and hush puppies. Its a fun way to end the week with good food and cold beer.

it's still there...lol... I'm not sure where you've been. I went there over Thanksgiving week.
Jake and Dorthy's Cafe is another nice one, its a old hole in the wall place in Stephenville but its not bad, go with cash or a checkbook, no credit cards allowed. Its really old, and if you at least 40 years old if you can remember those old cash registers... they still have one...and use it... LOL. when I saw it i was like 'OMG!!!!' but yeah...
