Who Has the Best Home Cooking in Texas?
Okay, Texans, let's gather around the computer campfire for a little bit. What do you think is the best place to go in the state of Texas for home cooking? By that, I mean fried chicken, chicken-fried steak, meat loaf, pork chops, fresh veggies, comfort food. What is your favorite place to go? And it has to be in Texas. It might be the place where you live. Maybe you have a favorite place where you travel in Texas to get what I've mentioned.
I'd like to see what you guys have to say. Let 'er rip!

LOL!! Has all this posting about food made you hungry?!
Actually, the type of restaurant that you mention is the exact type I tend to avoid when I travel..and I've never been in one that was all that good.
They typically cook their veggies to olive-drab mush, including the black-eyed peas--their fried chicken usually has the skin on (GROSS), the chicken fried steak is greasy and tough...and I've never ever had decent meat loaf at a restaurant.
I'm curious to see what answers pop up, because I have never been to such a place that was fit to eat.

I like Threadgill's or Arkie's in Austin. Bluebonnet Cafe is the place to go in Marble Falls, especially for the pie. The Blue Plate Cafe (I've misspelled it but can't find it thru Google) on the square in La Grange is good. In Fayetteville, I like Orsak's. Hoover's Home Cooking in Austin is also pretty good. I could go on, but I'll stop here and see what everyone else comes up with.
This is fun!

My goodness, we're getting off to a rough start, aren't we? I'm sorry you don't a favorite place in mind. Let's see if we can keep it on the positive side, you guys.

I second you on Threadgill's. I do need to go back to Bluebonnet to try out their pies.

Try This One
There's a really good local chain in the Dallas area and it's only in that region. It's Mama's Daughter's Diner. They have great sides and fantastic homemade rolls. Very good chicken-fried chicken and meat loaf. And the prices are good, too. I get it to go many times by calling and placing my order. It's wonderful whenever I don't feel like cooking.

i bet it would be our resident Texas CD forum member Cathy's house!
my favorite place i will never forget is a place in western Tarrant County-almost Parker County, on Cattlebaron Drive, between White Settlement Road and FM 1886 (Lakeside), called The Cattlebaron's Steakhouse (i think?). i used to live walking distance from it-it was on a dairy farm....big ole red barn...in middle of nowhere.
big buffalo statue inside. pool tables on second floor. sawdust dance floor in the dining area, and large wooden picnic tables inside....very warm, cozy family atmosphere...it's where everyone went for steak and two steppin! they had their own band, called something like "Cattlebaron Boys", they played a mean Orange Blossom Special and Wabash Cannonball, and lots of Bob Wills/Texas Swing............gawd, i miss it....those were some great years!
i wonder if it is still around....this was in the late 90's...anyone know?

Boy, weren't they?!?!
We had a Cattlebaron's in Midland that was excellent......the same is owned by Tinnie's Silver Dollar in Tinnie, NM, where we would always stop on the way home from skiing in Ruidoso!

Sorry, didn't mean to be so negative. I have really tried to like this type of restaurant....
