Default need help for Beaumont, TX!

Hello everybody,

I have been having horrible confusing time to decide where to go. but looks like its not going to be my choice its my sponsor agency's choice.

I am going to be an exchange student in usa this summer. I'll possibly go to Beaumont, TX. The job my sponsor agency offered me is Burger King job. which pays 8$/hr. and the place to stay is 75$/weekly.

So, I really dont know much about Beaumont... I know / heard some nice things about Houston, Dallas... but thats just it. and I'll probably spend most of my time in Beaumont even though its close to the one of major cities in tx. I ont have a car.

as for me, I am 22 year old, ukrainian, girl. and i love socializing, traveling, making friends, SHOPPING.. etc so yeah its a big plus for me if there is some nice places to shop in Beaumont

And since its only 8 dollars per hour and 32 hrs per week, i would like to find a second job such as in target or starbucks or walmart... what do you think about it? how hard would it be?

I have no problem with the hot weather so its okay.

I'd like to take all of you's opinions on that. thank you for reading so far.

I havent been in Beaumont other than a summer job 40 years ago. It is a nice city with oil, specifically refineries and chemical plants as its primary job base. It has a nice port but Beaumont chose years ago not to grow rapidly so Houston took the growth. With engineers at the refineries it has some upper income and some old money so some shopping probaby exists but I cant tell you more than that.

I believe you will be able to find a second job like you want, enjoy your time in Beaumont for one summer?

A lot of threads on Beaumont on this site. A lot of unfavorable things also. Kinda un-Texas like trait runnin' a place down. I was taught to say something good or just don't say anything.

I work in Beaumont at their largest hospital but live 50 miles north of there. Beaumont is OK. Enough shopping for a city of 110,000, some good food, especially the Cajun influenced foods. The whole area is mostly based on petro-chemical industries. If you are going to be in a dorm around Lamar University and working on that side of town you'll be miles from the more upscale areas (shopping).

Btw, there are a lot of Eastern European (Ukranians too) girls working the restaurants in Galveston during tourist season!

I live near Beaumont! My family lives in the Lumberton area and I frequent Beaumont on the weekends.

It's not a terrible place! Lamar is pretty nice and I have a lot of friends who went to/go to the school. There is pretty decent shopping in the Beaumont mall area, it has almost everything a big city mall would have minus fancy, upscale stores like Coach or something, no worries though, Coach is still sold at Nordstorms and Dillard's.

The worst part of Beaumont is the traffic, hands down. Rush hour traffic is horrendous. It all gets backed up!

It is definitely doable to get a second job. I suggest something like The Buckle or a restaurant where you can make higher, commission based pay.

Good luck!

^^^Another trashy post. No help for the OP just a smartazz retort about Beaumont which reflects directly on the character and lack of class of the poster. This is a shame because I have read some decent posts by him before and know he is capable of higher standards ... but, alas, chose the low road.

if you can help it, do not come to beaumont. I have lived here all my life and yes if you like cajun food and you dont mind petro chemical plants and stinky air then beaumont may be for you.

I would also go to a different school besides Lamar University, they were just recently investigated about money mysteriously disappearing that was supposed to go to scholarships. The school itself is not very consistent when it comes to offering classes on a semester to semester schedule. Think very carefully before you come. At Lamar, I did not meet many people that were from the Ukraine.
