Moving to Bay City, Texas
Hi,
I am moving from San Diego, CA to Bay City, Texas. I wanted to know how are the race relations, and the over all job market for nursing in this area?
Thanks

i dont know the area, but have practiced nursing for 16 years, in North and South Texas. as you know, job opportunities are plentiful and you can write your own ticket. just like anywhere else. keep in mind, salaries are much lower than San Diego but look at the cost of living! prison nurses start at 7500/month in California, and ungodly high amount for correctional health, one of the traditionally lowest paying specialties......but your rents are a grand and up! (and thats without a big huge yard or acreage!!)

Wow, I'm sorry.
You're in for quite a culture shock. Have you ever been there before?

Curious about city too
I know it will be a culture shock to move from San Diego to a smaller town, but we are considering the move too and are in San Diego.
We live in a very small town set about 30 miles outside of San Diego.
What I'd like to know about is the weather and if there are off road enthusiasts around bay city?
Thanks

I actually do live in Bay City, TX
Hi! I'm a life time native of Bay City, Texas. To answer your questions...I believe nurses are needed virtually everywhere, but we are in the process of building a brand new hospital, expecting to be finished by the end of the year. There is also a medical center in a neighboring community with half an hours drive.
We do not have a race issue here. People of diversified ethnic backgrounds are welcome and as far as I can tell are not discriminated against and are accepted well.
Our housing costs are good...apartments range from $375.00-600 per month, depending on whether you get a studio, one bedroom, etc. Houses rent for about $400-900 depending on the location, number of bedrooms, etc. We have a great selection of churches and schools.
I'd love to answer your questions, if you have more. I believe we have a great town. We're only an hour south of Houston (an added benefit for further sporting events, medical centers, concerts, entertainment, shopping), 20 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico (for great recreation and water fun!), offer a range of community events, organizations, etc. There are a lot of water events, sports, etc. As far as off roading...we have Mud races, we're very into outdoors sports, not sure about specific off roading, but lots of room to do whatever you want. Lots of country, lots of room.
Anyway...if I can be of more help, just ask.
Take care,
TJ

Bay City, TX weather
Forgot to comment on the weather...virtually the same as south Florida. Hot, humid, sunny most of the time. We get our share of rain, but you could consider this area tropical. We do get hurricanes...but really not very often. I've lived here for over 50 years and have only actually experienced 3 of them. So, it's not as often as most people would think. I've also experienced snow about the same number of times. It's not surprising to be wearing shorts at Christmas! Winter clothes last a really long time down here, as they never get a chance to get worn out!
We have about 6 months of summer, a 2-3 months winter (rarely down to freezing) and about 2-3 months of spring.
Hope this helps! By the way...welcome!

I, too, am interested in learning more about Bay City and am looking at possible employment there at the nuclear facility. How far is the nuclear plant from Bay City, and are there other cities nearby the plant other than Bay City? I am coming from the coast of North Carolina.

TJ, I didn't realize if I hit "befriend" it actually sends you a note. After reading your response to the nurse who was looking at coming to Bay City, it sounds like you know your way around, since you are a native of Bay City. I have some specific questions I'd like to ask you about housing. I would be looking to rent a house and have 3 cats. I'd be working at the nuclear plant so rent would not be a problem. I'm concerned about neighborhoods. I am a single white female, 50, and would prefer to rent a house in a subdivision where I would not be the exception. It does not have to be a gated subdivision, but I am looking for a secure and quiet place. Where would you recommend?
