Default College in Brownsville

Im a Canadian, been accepted to UTB, just wondering how it is? I applied to these schools for a culture change and the weather lol I've only been to South Padre Island for Spring Break before and know it will probably be completely different. Any tips? information on Brownsville? I've heard good and bad...

You can learn a lot about the community here http://www.city-data.com/city/Brownsville-Texas.html You will probably want to spend most of your time in summer on South Padre Island, or go back to visit family in Canada, to get away from the heat. Even though people talk a lot about crime along the border, the crime rate in Brownsville is quite low, not much above the US Average. If you look only at the total violent crime in the area it is really low compared to other cities of its size, way below the average. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_...%93_250,000%29

There is some negativity in these threads, but also some good positive information.

How is Brownsville?
Is University of Texas-Brownsville really a horrible college/university?

I got some relative who go there and on more than one occasion the campus was on lockdown because of gun fire coming from across the border. The campus is literally blocks from Mexico.
