What customs, foods, speech, mannerisms do you find unique to natives of the Lone Star State, that you do not find in other Southern states or the US in general? Are there many?

Good BBQ. Other than possibly Memphis-style, nothing is as good as Texas BBq!
Ribeye steaks. It's almost impossible to find them outside of Texas!

  • Texas is the only state that is legally permitted to secede from the Union. (Near the conclusion of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation that made it illegal for any Confederate-controlled territories to secede from the Union if and when it was ever readmitted into the Union. At this time, Texas was controlled by Union forces and, therefore, was exempted from the proclamation.)
  • The world's first rodeo was held in Pecos on July 4, 1883.
  • The first word spoken from the moon on July 20, 1969 was Houston.
  • Texas is the only state to enter the United States by treaty instead of territorial annexation.

This is a myth. Secession is not "legal" for any state and was not legal prior to the civil war for Texas or any other state. Even had Lincoln wished to exempt Texas from this requirement upon re-admittance, he could not have done so.

The United States Supreme Court ruled in Texas v. White, 74 U.S. 700 (1869) that unilateral secession was unconstitutional while commenting that revolution or consent of the states could lead to a successful secession. Not that the US would give that consent and not that Texas would give a crap either way.

Have you read Texas v. White?

Quote:
When, therefore, Texas became one of the United States, she entered into an indissoluble relation. All the obligations of perpetual union, and all the guaranties of republican government in the Union, attached at once to the State. The act which consummated her admission into the Union was something more than a compact; it was the incorporation of a new member into the political body. And it was final. The union between Texas and the other States was as complete, as perpetual, and as indissoluble as the union between the original States. There was no place for reconsideration or revocation, except through revolution or through consent of the States
This doesn't mean Texas has a legal "secede" option any more than any state does, which is what your initial remark indicated: that 'Texas is the only state that is legally permitted to secede from the Union'.

'Consent of the states' just means that if both parties wanted secession it could happen, but that's true of any government. As for revolution ... well, illegal doesn't mean impossible.

In the 1800's Texas had a foreign embassy in London. Not sure how many states can lay claim to anything similar.
