I currently live in Laguna Vista, but want to move to Brownsville, my 11 y/o son will attend Vela Middle School in Brownsville, but I'm having the hardest time finding afterschool childcare. I work f/t and am a single mom, surely I'm not the only parent who needs afterschool care... I've called Boys and Girls Club and they don't provide transportation, I also called a community center across from Vela and they don't offer any programs, either. I have asked at the school and didn't get any help. If anyone has any suggestions I would truly appreciate it. Thanks.

I empathize, I really do, because I was a single mum living in Brownsville with no family around to help. It seems as if people there have family, a live-in maid from Mexico, or a flexible work environment. I was able to leave to pick up my son from school and take him to the Boys and Girls Club or sometimes he would come back to the office with me.

I no longer live there but, before I moved, I thought I saw some day care centers advertising that they provide after school care and transportation. I don't know what they charge, but you might want to check it out. I know I didn't want to have someone living with me and I don't agree with hiring help illegally, either.

I don't know how late you work, but you might consider having your son sign up for an activity that practices after school, such as football, band, etc. The district has an "activities bus" that takes the kids home after practice. By the time practice has ended and the bus brings him home, you could very well be home from work.

Good luck to you!
