A not quite 5 year resident of Delaware, actually. I was living in Lithuania, briefly, and then in England after decamping from Texas.

I'd think you'd want to stay in Beaumont, definitely stay away from old Port Arthur ... it's dangerous. Mid county (Port Neches, Nederland) is OK ... especially Nederland. I did live in Port Neches for a total of 22 years at 2 different times and although it is OK as a bedroom community it seems kinda lack luster now. Possibly look west of Beaumont in the Fannet area if you'd like a bit more space with a bit of country atmosphere ... it'd be about 10 minutes out of town at most. Gotta watch sea level and get nowhere that would be less than 20'-22' above sea level (because of potential storm surges).

North of Beaumont 10 minutes is Lumberton which lends itself to a more woodsy atmosphere and is clean, newer, and developing. I'd guess a lot depends on where you'd be based out of. Orange is a town that is wilting on the stem as their industrial base shrinks but is nice enough in some areas. Vidor is a more unorganized with little to no zoning but house prices would be best there I'd suppose.

San Antonio is nice too, has pro sports, lots of attractions, only 2-3 hours from some of the nicer beaches in Texas. And again, maybe your wife would feel more comfortable. Professionally and socially it kinda comes down to do you want to be in a big pond or smaller pond.

Welcome to Texas. Where are you two coming from?

Bob is right. Port Arthur is a no no. A friend of mine went to TJ, and even he says that. Mid county is probably the best area. If I were to move back, it would be there or possibly one of the areas surrounding Orange. Orange itself was on life support, and Ike was the final nail in the coffin. Orange is a dump now, but the city is taking great pains to attempt revitalization. But places like Bridge City and Orangefield are actually kind of nice if you like the small town life.

Yes specific the neighborhood I was referring to is a good place to be relieved of your worldly possessions. That would be correct. Although part of downtown Beaumont itself has changed dramatically over the last decade or so with the entertainment district.

You would like San Antonio better.

Why only those 2 locations? Why not Houston? It has a huge medical center, and tons of surrounding suburbs which requires lots of paramedics.

A lot of those services aren't hiring. Believe me, Houston and pretty much all of Texas is an option (heck, the US...) but Acadian has a good offer on the table.
