Big Spring is a very special place, depending on the individual. I of course wouldn't argue that it's paradise my any means, but the regular folk there in my experience were just great. I lived there for three years in the 90s, and for me it was just what I needed at the time. So many dear friends and precious memories.

As far as climate, the worst part for me was the wind (asthma and allergies). It is a very windy place. Sometimes the dust storms are so bad the street lights come on in the middle of the day.

There's definitely a remarkable degree of poverty and dilapidated buildings in the town. The state park is one of the best things about Big Spring. Sunsets on Scenic Mountain are almost always fantastic. Something to do with all the dust in the atmosphere I think.

Soil is rocky and dry. ground water has a saltiness and mineral deposits with some metals. Wind is usually out of the southwest or northwest. florra and fauna include cacti, mesquite and I did see a pomagrante tree dowtown and a bois de arc tree and there are fig trees behind a church off of Hearn St. and I know some folks that say apricots and peaches grow well. There is cotton also. there are apple trees up bu Idalou near Lubbock and some sunflower fields also towards Lubbock. Pecans grow here too. There are lots of coyotes and grey foxes and some deer and gackle birds and roadrunners a few hawks and some say there are javalina pigs. Ive seen turtles and carp at the spring and lake area some perch and catfish but don't eat them as the ground water is bad. There is a field with some llama and one with buffalo and one with 3 elks there is a herd of antelope that run north of town between Big Spring and Snyder (reports of a sasquatch too along the Colorado River on that highway for those that believe for that matter there are reports of UFOs south of town near Forsan and a Chupacabra east of town near Abilene and a few ghosts here in town)

Allergies I found cotton spraying time or planting time to be bad as they fertilize and kill off the leaves when they go to pick and I found Mexican Juniper pollenating times to be bad. there is a lot of juniper and cedar and some live oak. Prickly pear and buckhorn and century plant are the main cacti very little pines but they grow okay and I have some Holly trees that grow very well and there are some aspen over by my place and I work with one that says her avacodo and lemon trees grow and I have seen a few palms around here and a banana tree, lots of yuccas too
Desert like really there is a lot of base rock of limestone and caliche. The Edward's Plateau and Caprock are close the area is wedged between them in an area called the Permian Basin.

Housing is deteriorated with almost no new building.
