I was stationed at Laughlin AFB in Del Rio and I used to enjoy U.S. 90, as well. I got used to the drive East to San Antonio and even West to the pecos River. (I regret not taking it farther out through Big Bend Country and on to El paso...sigh. But I really enjoyed my time there in South TX.

We just spend a beautiful weekend in the Guadalupe Mountains of West Texas. Drove with the 5'er from El Paso, about a 2 hour drive, the drive was just beautiful.
Another drive we really enjoyed was from El Paso to Ft. Davis. This one we rode on the Harley
Big Bend is on my list for next year.

I have to 2nd Cathy4017 on 170 from Presidio to Study Butte. It is my favorite in the state.
Also nice and not too far from your new area is Park Rd. 4 just north of Marble Falls off 281 connecting to Hwy 29. You come out on Hwy 29 not too far from Llano and Coopers BBQ.
I was just out 281 yesterday. Someone already mentioned 32 from Blanco back to Hwy 12 into Wimberley. That is called Devil's Backbone and is supposed to be one of the most haunted places in the state. I was out that way yesterday, but too much traffic for any self-respecting ghosts to be lurking about. Also from 281 at Blanco, try Hwy 165 back to Henley on Hwy. 290 between Johnson City and Dripping Springs. That is nice also.
And I think I already mentioned the loop from Copperas Cove in another thread: 2653, right on 963, right on 183 to Lampasas, 190 back to Copperas Cove.

I was also in your area yesterday. Someone said that a lady from Austin came to Blanco and bought most of the buildings in their dowtown because she thinks that it's going to be the next hotspot for real estate, etc. On 281, there's already too much traffic there and it's only a matter of time before Johnson City is the next one on the hit list.
There were lots of bikes (motor) on the various roads out there...is this usually how it is on the weekends or is there some kind of event going on? I almost hit one guy as he was making a turn around the bend. He had a dark bike and blended in with the surroundings...wish he had his light on.

There's a tie for first place in my book. That's Big Bend Country (and believe me, there ain't nothing bigger) and along the Gulf from Rockport to Port Lavaca. It's a fantastic drive and I intend to go again.

Yes and yes! Since Blanco is near SAT and Austin, it makes for a good day ride any time the weather is decent. And yesterday people were also returning home from a weekend bike event in Bandera.

I've been meaning to do that one for a while. My next time in Austin, I've got to give that one a go.

We took another trip today. Started heading west out of San Antonio on Hwy 90 to Sabinal. Then took Road 127 northwest to where it meets Hwy 83 North at Concan. Continued north on 83 through Leakey and up to Junction. Then took I10 heading east back to San Antonio. We've been to Leakey a couple of times, but went either west to Camp Wood or east to Vanderpool, but have never continued north on 83. Nice section (about 65 miles) to Junction though. On the way there was a small General Store on the right where you can get some good brisket, sausage, or jerky. They also sell Exxon gas. In all, about a 4 1/2 hour drive.

North Central Expressway, Dallas North Tollway (as well as the service road Dallas Parkway), and State Highway 121 in north Dallas (when it is not rush hour). I get a state of mind that I just cannot describe and it takes my mind off of Oklahoma's less than perfect roads.
I also like the some of the three-lane windy roads of the north Dallas suburbs.

I'd have to say the entire loop around Corpus Christi Bay. Nothing else like it in Texas.
