I-40 coming out of New Mexico and crossing the Texas border. It may not be the prettiest drive but it is one that I can't wait to make in June 2009 as I make my way home to Texas from Oregon. I can promise you that we will stop and I will get down on my arthritic knees and kiss the ground of my home state and vow to never leave again!

I hear you loud and clear! Only my drive will be I-30, crossing over from Arkansas into Texas when I move to Austin.

I can only tell you that I-35 from the Oklahoma border to San Antonio and I-37 from San Antonio to Corpus Christi are NOT interesting having driven that route 7 times in the past 12 months.

Yes ma'am! I see myself driving in my old school BMW, with my music jamming, cruising down U.S. 75 southbound en route to Dallas. Once I cross the Texas/Oklahoma (not Oklahoma/Texas border), or the Red River, I just start smiling.

Texas FM 2810 heading Soutwest out of Marfa, talk about desolation! I haven't personally driven down it, but I would like to.

Personally, I think the drive from Southwest to Northwest Austin on 360, or the drive from Mopac to the Oasis/Lake Travis on 2222 are the nicest (when there is no traffic)... I love the mix of urban city, hills, trees, and the lakes. However, I have to give props to autotech4dallas for the unique perspective re: the drive on Central in Dallas... in a non-nature way, it's a very cool drive. The sunken part of Central is a real treat in a big-city sense, it's almost like you get to pilot your own subway through an incredibly built-up corridor of north Dallas. It took forever to build, but it's a really nice arterial highway.

My favorite roads that are near the Metroplex are (1) Highway 180 from Weatherford west through Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto and beyond to near Breckenridge, and (2) FM 4 south from Palo Pinto to I-20. They are beautiful on a motorcycle. All of that area which runs north-south through Texas from near Lake Bridgeport south to near San Antonio is beautiful.

I agree completely that staying on the interstates is not conducive to an interesting trip. The state highways are much more fun, and the little towns along them are a slice of Texana not seen by many. Many of them are almost like a time machine, having apparently changed little for fifty years (except for prices, of course).
