Btw, I live in Houston and don't plan on moving anywhere else in the state. However I drove into Dallas this friday night on 45 and was amazed how different Dallas skyline looks from the last time I been to the city. I mean, I always thought Dallas had Houston beat at night but overrall Houston had the better skyline but DAMN! Dallas just took a huge dump with it's new developments. I've seen so many pictures of the new projects Dallas have put up but to see it in person. It's awhole different feeling. I know there's plenty of Dallas vs. Houston threads. Trust me I still pick Houston over Dallas for me, however I felt a little jealous to see the architecture Dallas buildings have over Houston. It's as if Dallas knows the importance of image and are pushing the envelope of architecture in Texas whereas Houston is just building buildings w/ no artistic soul. And it hurts me to say this because I've always picked Houston over Dallas, lol. I tip my hat off to the city of Dallas.
This all subjective, but in my opinion, Dallas has nicer buildings. Houston does have a taller and larger skyline and then there is the Galleria area, so Houston has a lot more tall buildings although it's skyline is a little dull with the exception of the Williams tower and Bank of America Center. I drove through Dallas last week and despite Dallas feeling small compared to Houston, you do get the impression that Dallas is really doing many projects downtown. Lots of building. Houston seems to have slowed down a little in terms of both building and trying to attract more people to the city's core. Dallas also feels more like a city. I always said that Houston feels more like a big suburb with tall buildings than a true urban city. Also, road construction in Houston is endless and very dragged out which deters people from coming downtown. In the NYC area roads are repaved or even widened rather quickly. In Houston it took them nearly two years to repave Kirby and Buffalo Speedway. Pathetic. Talk about pork barrel spending.

I usually try to stay away from threads like this because they seem to reek of teenage male angst (please, nobody take offense, I was probably like that once, too!).

But, to come back full circle with the OP ... I'm a native Houstonian who also enjoys Dallas and sees many things to admire, even while I continue to be inclined to defend my home town.

I think that if Houstonians come off as being insecure, maybe it's because they're used to incessant criticism, much of which (not all) is based on ignorance and/or prejudice. My main complaint with my home town is that we have not lived up to our potential as much as I would like, in terms of offering a good quality of life. There was a time when we had leaders with statesmanlike behaviors that led to things we are proud of today (e.g., the Texas Medical Center, Memorial Park, Hermann Park, Rice U, the ship channel, et al.) I think that at some point, we stopped having that kind of leadership. Perhaps many of Dallas' more recent successes come from still having visionary leaders who have the capital and/or political support to big things that have long-term impact.

I see your point. I do believe Houston has some good qualities, but there are many negative factors ruining the quality of life. I moved to Houston in 2007. It was booming when I came down and then literally overnight in 2010ish, things just came to a halt. Part of it was the beginning of the Parker years, but also gang violence and Moderator cut: see comment Now with NASA being put on the back burner Moderator cut: see comment, Houston is no longer looking so strong. When I moved out in January, the moving company even told me that they are actually doing well because all of a sudden a lot of people are leaving Houston - the most he had seen. To make matters worse is that most of those leaving are highly educated and are going to places like Denver, Seattle, Boston and even Dallas or Austin. Therefore, Houston is losing its collective IQ. There was an article in the chronicle recently that local "experts" are concerned about Houston's future due to educated people leaving Moderator cut: see comment. It's a shame because it was nice when I came down in 2007, but even I noticed Houston go down hill in that short time.
